Elite Bastards posted a review on the ASUS
Maximus III Formula motherboard A quote from
the article:
ASUS' motherboard layouts always tend to
impress, and the Maximus III Formula sticks to
that clean but effective layout, which should
prevent anything too major in the way of
component placement conflicts or the like.
The rear of the motherboard offers up a single
PS/2 port for a keyboard, nine USB 2.0 ports
(one of which is offered up for ASUS' RoG
Connect functionality), a single FireWire and
eSATA port and a Gigabit RJ45 network jack.

TweakTown posted a review on the Sapphire Radeon
HD 5830 Video Card in CrossFire A quote from
the article:
Having already looked at the HD 5830 in
reference form, it was time to see what our
retail card could do when combined with the
reference model we've already looked at. Over
the past few months and clearly the past few
releases, we've had a look at all the models in
Crossfire and have been extremely happy with the
performance boost that the setups gave us.
Out of the box the Sapphire doesn't look like
our reference card. How it really changes,
however, is something we'll get into more detail
on later. For now let's check out the package
and see if Sapphire can wow us with the latest
model from ATI.

Legit Reviews posted a preview on the ASUS X58
Rampage III Extreme Motherboard
A quote from the article:
I'm rather glad ASUS stuck with the Rampage
Extreme branding as it lets me say stuff like
EEEEXXXXTRRREEEEMMMMMEEE in daily conversation.
I know in just writing this article I've mumbled
that to myself a half-dozen times with a grin on
my face. I have a feeling the Rampage III
Extreme will be another board that goes down in
the history books for high performance. The ASUS
R3E motherboard though won't be limited in
appreciation to just those people who benchmark
with liquid nitrogen and dry ice. A lot of
thought was put into the layout and the fact
that it has an ATX form factor height means
it'll enable 4-way CrossFire in a normal ATX
case unlike the EVGA X58 Classified 4-Way SLI
which fits in only a handful of cases...

MSI HD R5770 Hawk Review
Tuesday February
23 @ 08:15:28 GMT +02:00
|
|
OCC has published a review on the MSI HD R5770
Hawk A quote from the article:
Now, after talking up the overclocking potential
of the military class components and great
cooling capabilities of the MSI HD R5770 Hawk,
did it live up to it's overclocking hype? The
answer to that question is a resounding, yes!
During overclocking the Hawk's GPU core maxed
out at 1025Mhz, which is roughly a 17% overclock
and the memory was extremely overclockable as
well, reaching a final frequency of 1410MHz
before running into any stability issues. These
clocks will make this card an absolute value to
the overclocking community, but the MSI Hawk
isn't done yet.

Vista Codec Package 5.6.1 Final
Tuesday February

|
These codec releases are the only
codecs you will ever need.
Codecs have always been a big problem for the
computer users. That's because there has never
been a 100% viable working solution available
for the average computer user. There are several
good codec package solutions out there, but none
of them did everything i wanted. I was always in
need of a tweak, adjustment, or even a
reinstallation just to get the codecs I
needed/wanted and most of the time, the file
still didn't play. I've never claimed to be a
media guru. My media experience is to
doubleclick a file i downloaded and hope that it
plays. What I do know is how to package
software. So I decided to package some codecs
and share them with the rest of the world. With
this package all possible conflicts are already
dealt with. Many user suggested default settings
are implemented,
If you have a suggestion of improvement, I'm
listening.
It does not contain a media player and it
doesn't associates filetypes. With this package
installed you will be able to use any media
player, limited only by the players'
capabilities, to play DVD's, movies and video
clips of almost any filetype. Streaming video is
supported in all popular web browsers. By
default you won't need to make any adjustments
to enjoy a variety of media content immediately.
Users have the ability to choose what is
installed using the public redistributable or
after an unattended install, you can select to
remove specific portions without removing the
entire package. Future releases will recognize
previous releases and are capable of performing
upgrade installations.

Windows Phone 7 Series hands-on
and impressions

Engaget posted their first impressions from the
new Windows Phone 7 Series
Forget everything you know about Windows Mobile.
Seriously, throw the whole OS concept in a
garbage bin or incinerator or something.
Microsoft has done what would have been
unthinkable for the company just a few years
ago: started from scratch. At least, that's how
things look (and feel) with Windows Phone 7
Series. This really is a completely new OS --
and not just Microsoft's new OS, it's a new
smartphone OS, like webOS new, like iPhone OS
new. You haven't used an interface like this
before (well, okay, if you've used a Zune HD
then you've kind of used an interface like
this). Still, 7 Series goes wider and deeper
than the Zune by a longshot, and it's got some
pretty intense ideas about how you're supposed
to be interacting with a mobile device. We had a
chance to go hands-on with the dev phone before
today's announcement, and hear from some of the
people behind the devices, and here's our
takeaway. (And don't worry, we've got loads of
pictures and video coming, so keep checking this
post for the freshest updates).

ATI Radeon HD 5570 Review
Wednesday February
10 @ 08:34:19 GMT +02:00
|
|
TechSpot posted their ATI Radeon HD 5570 Review
A quote from the article:
It's self-evident how AMD has kept us busy over
the last few months, showing us new generation
GPUs aiming at all possible price points. From
the performance-oriented HD 5850/5870, to the
mainstream HD 5770 and the extreme dual-GPU
powered HD 5970. The budget models had to wait a
bit longer.
Today AMD is introducing another new member to
the Radeon HD 5000 family -- the eighth
installment in the series. The ATI Radeon HD
5570 will sit between the aforementioned Radeon
HD 5450 and 5670 in terms of pricing and
performance, which means it should deliver a
similar level of performance to that of the
Radeon HD 4670 at the same starting price of
~$79.
The Radeon HD 5570 is a more powerful GPU than
the HD 5450, capable of playing games
comfortably at 720p while retaining some of the
HTPC-friendly properties that made the latter an
attractive buy.

TweakTown posted a review on the ASUS P7H57D-V
EVO (H57 Express) Motherboard A quote from the
article:
ASUS is a manufacturer known for the features
they stuff into their motherboards. This has
been viewed as both a benefit and an annoyance,
but in the end you cannot deny that ASUS does
know how to make a motherboard with performance
in mind.
ASUS has now brought this mindset to bear for
the H55 and H57 chipset. Although the H55 and
H57 are aimed at the mainstream and entry level
market, ASUS has not allowed this to stop them

Today for review I've got the Thermaltake DuOrb

it's copper and it has blue LEDs in it for a
little color in your case. I've got a Diamond

works fairly well, but it can get rather loud
under load so I had high hopes that the DuOrb

on the NZXT Tempest-EVO Computer Case
A quote from the article:
Following the success of the original Tempest
mid-tower computer case, NZXT tinkered around
with its designs and came up with the NZXT
Tempest Evo. The two cases share many of the
same assets, and are both priced at $119.99. The
Tempest Evo features an array of upgrades,
including a unified paint job and better cable
management. With a total of six 120mm
intake/exhaust fans, the NZXT Tempest Evo
mid-tower case promises excellent airflow.

HotHardware.com takes a look at the performance
of the AMD Phenom II X2 555 and Athlon II X4 635
processors
AMD is launching a bevy of new processors today,
targeted squarely at budget conscious consumers,
looking to save a few bucks on the their next PC
build. The new processors differ from previous
offerings in their respective product families
in terms of frequency, and of course their model
names, but all are based on existing
architectures and technology.
We decided to take the 3.2GHz Phenom II X2 555
and 2.9GHz Athlon II X4 635 out for a spin and
have their performance results posted on the
pages ahead...

Legit Reviews posted a review on the AMD Phenom
II X4 910e 2.6GHz 65W TDP Processor A quote
from the article:
The AMD Phenom II 910e is a Quad-core processor
that features the Deneb core. The predecessor to
the Phenom II 910e was the 905e. The Phenom II
905e has the same bus speed as the Phenom II
910e, but the multiplier was x12.5 while the
Phenom II 910e has a x13 multiplier. That small
bump in the multiplier is what accounts for the
100MHz difference in the two processors. That
means that the AMD Phenom II X4 910e has a final
clock frequency of 2.6GHz with 2MB of L2 and 6MB
of L3 cache. Not bad specifications for a
processor that has a TDP that is nearly half the
Wattage used on other popular Phenom II X4
processors!

NVIDIA GF100 GPU Fermi Graphics

Benchmark Reviews posted an article on the
NVIDIA GF100 GPU Fermi Graphics Architecture
NVIDIA's latest GPU is codenamed GF100, and is
the first graphics processor based on the Fermi
architecture. In this article, Benchmark Reviews
explains the technical architecture behind
NVIDIA's GF100 graphics processor and offers an
insight into upcoming Fermi-based GeForce video
cards. For those who are not familiar, NVIDIA's
GF100 GPU is their first graphics processor to
support DirectX-11 hardware features such as
tessellation and DirectCompute, while also
adding heavy particle and turbulence effects.
The GF100 GPU is also the successor to the GT200
graphics processor, which launched in the
GeForce GTX 280 video card. NVIDIA has since
redefined their focus, and GF100 proves a
dedication towards next generation gaming
effects such as raytracing, order-independent
transparency, and fluid simulations. Rest
assured, the new GF100 GPU is more powerful than
the GT200 could ever be, and early results
indicate a Fermi-based video card delivers far
more than twice the gaming performance over a
GeForce GTX-280.

TweakTown posted a review on the SilverStone
Raven RV02-BW Case
A quote from the article:
As with most things produced, manufacturers
sometimes make revisions along the way. Some are
based out of necessary improvements, while
others are based off of input from users, while
other ideas just make their way in as another
solution to the same problem. The RV01 spent a
little time on my desktop until it was replaced
by something new, I only had one real issue with
it the entire time of use, and that was when the
front door would accidentally release and scare
the stuff out of me in the process.
Changes have in fact been made in the RV01, and
today we get to look at the Raven RV02 chassis
and see what changes made it into the new
version. Some, from my research, are pretty
major changes, while others can almost be
overlooked if you haven’t owned the original
version. It’s about time we have a look at the
specifications and current pricing, then we can
get a real look at what the SilverStone RV02
offers over the RV01.

Up until now, we've seen what appears to be
seemingly few LED monitors on the market. A
handful of manufacturers have a token model or

be fairly overall affordable, but availability
can be hit or miss depending on the brand.
Although the Samsung XL2370 has been on the

their "best performing monitor yet" and throwing
some pretty powerful words around when

Microsoft offers Windows XP, Office XP users 50
percent discount to encourage upgrades
Microsoft officials are well aware that its
biggest Windows 7 and Office 2010 competitors
are its own previous product iterations (Windows
XP and Office XP/2003). To try and wean users
away from older, “good-enough” releases,
Microsoft is introducing a new licensing
promotion.
The revamped “Up to Date Discount” program is
targeted at small/mid-size business (SMB)
customers running older versions of Windows and
Office. Between January 1 and June 30 of this
year, Microsoft is enabling users running
Windows XP or Vista (on the operating system
side) and Office XP, Office 2003 or Office 2007
(on the productivity suite side) to receive a
discount of 50 percent on the cost of their
licenses for Windows 7 and Office 2007 (or

SSD Performance: Marvell SATA-6G
vs Intel ICH10
Tuesday December

|
Benchmark Reviews posted a review on the SSD
Performance of Marvell SATA-6G vs Intel ICH10
When the Seagate Barracuda XT was revealed as
the World's first-ever third generation SATA
6GBps hard drive, expectations for performance
were raised to match the new bandwidth limit.
While this drive offered tremendous storage
capacity paired to good performance, the
transfer speeds were nowhere near the second
generation SATA 3GBps limit. This is where
Benchmark Reviews turns to our vast collection
of Solid State Drive storage products, some of
which eclipse the SATA-II range. However, our
history of SSD performance tests on the Intel
ICH10 Southbridge would prove to be very
different than our results on the new Marvell
88SE9123 or 88SE9128 SATA-III chips. In this
article, Benchmark Reviews compares Marvell SATA
6G SSD performance against tests on the Intel
ICH10 chipset.

TestFreaks compared the performance of SSD vs
HDD on a Netbook I know the SSD is faster than
the HDD, but what I didn't really know wa show
it affected the system performance overall, so
being a reviewer I ran tests, lots of tests, to
find the answer. I ran storage specific tests, I
ran overall system tests and separate tests as
well and I found the obvious that the SSD is
faster. I also found the not so obvious as well
that at the system level the performance seemed
lower with the SSD installed. So continue on to
see the results of the testing and you can make
your own conclusions.

performance when utilizing two Radeon HD 5770's
A quote from the article:
Want to purchase a Radeon HD 5870, but can't
find one in stock? One alternative to consider
is instead purchasing two Radeon HD 5770's to
take advantage of CrossFireX. Not only does this
solution save you up to $80 at current pricing,
but it proved in our results to offer even
better performance in select titles, such as
with Modern Warfare 2.

AMD Phenom II 965 X4 Black
Edition C3 Processor Review
Tuesday December
08 @ 08:15:28 GMT +02:00
|
OCIA.net has posted their review of the AMD
Phenom II 965 X4 Black Edition C3 Processor
A quote from the article:
Although AMD has had some exciting new mid- and
entry-level chips come to market in the last
several months, their top of the line Phenom II
series has not seen much action since the
beginning of the year. But since we won't see
AMD's new six-core desktop Thuban processor
emerge until next year, what we have to feed off
of in the meantime is a new Phenom II core
revision, the C3. Beginning with the
highest-clocked chip, the 965 BE, the new core
will begin to filter down through the rest of
the lineup through next year. Enhancements to
the core are expected to lower voltage
requirements and thus reduce operating
temperature, which can potentially lead to
better, more stable overclocks. Is it worth the
upgrade expense for a current Phenom II owner to
make the change to the new revision though? Join
me as I aim to find out!

Benchmark Reviews posted an AVIVO PureVideo HD
DXVA GPU Acceleration Guide
A quote from the article:
HTPCs and HD content are growing more and more
around the GPU industry. ATI and NVIDIA have
been working on technologies to playback and
enhance this video content for many years.
NVIDIA started working on their Purevideo
technology and added the Purevideo HD some time
ago. ATI on the other hand, has their own AVIVO
technology and as it was obvious, they name
their latest technology AVIVO HD. Now, while
these technologies have been marketed too much,
I've noticed that the big consumers majority
doesn't even know how to use them. The real
problem is that neither NVIDIA nor ATI have done
enough to help people use their technology. They
can bombard you with so many pictures, images
and text but neither of these things will offer
a simple guide on how to use the software tools
in the real world. Here at Benchmark Reviews, we
will teach you how to use your GPU to playback
and enhance HD video content, and we're not
limited to DVD or Blu-ray content, because we'll
also address *.mkv files so that you can enjoy
your stored multimedia. There is so much content
available for download from Internet which can
be reproduced without using your CPU, that it
makes good sense to enhance the image quality
whenever possible. Please, have a read at our
AVIVO-HD PureVideo-HD DXVA GPU Acceleration
Guide and enjoy the Full High Definition
experience as it was meant to be!

ASUS Maximus III Formula (P55

Tuesday December

|
|
TweakTown posted a review on the ASUS Maximus
III Formula (P55 Express) Motherboard A quote
from the article:
Lynnfield boards are now starting to come out
thick in fast. Even before Computex 2009 went
underway we were hearing model numbers and names
being thrown around as well as seeing early
images of certain boards. And weeks before
launch we were even given a couple of boards for
preview. The ASUS P7P55D Deluxe was one and
GIGABYTE kindly sent early samples of its UD4
for a quick lookover as well.
Now that the Core i5 and Core i7 8xx series are
officially out, we are seeing so many companies
throwing out various P55 based boards. ASUS
already has sent us their P7P55D which we
reviewed earlier. This board is aimed at the
mid-range and high-end crowd. Today the Maximus
III Formula arrives for a good going over. This
board is aimed at the high-end to enthusiast
level crowd and is part of the Republic of
Gamers series.

ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell

|
InsideHW.com has reviewed ASUS Eee PC 1008HA
Seashell netbook A quote from the article:
At first sight, ASUS Eee PC 1008HA looks like
any other netbook made in piano finish, where
shiny black plastics dominates its exterior. In
case you take this netbook outdors and take a
good look at its surface under intensive
sunlight, you will notice small details on its
surface. Small dots (in our case blue dots) can
be visible, and those are making effects similar
to sand shimmering under the bright sunlight on
some beach. This can sound as a tacky detail,
but actually, it isn’t - on contrary. Except
this rather nice effect, this is still netbook
with piano finish surface, which is magnet for
fingerprints and nightmare for users that like
to keep their portable companion clean…

Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600

|
|
ThinkComputers.org posted Corsair
Dominator DDR3-1600 i7/i5 Optimized 4GB Dual
Channel Memory Kit Review A quote
from the article:
It obviously wasnt an insurmountable problem, as
we saw DDR3-2000 triple channel kits not long
after the release of the LGA 1366 i7, and I
found that not only did they do DDR3-2000 at
that voltage, they were all able to be
overclocked beyond that. Now that the LGA 1156
has been released, we need dual channel kits
utilizing that same low voltage requirement.
That obviously was no problem, the memory was
already there, they just needed packaging that
held only two modules rather than three. Today I
will be looking at one of Corsairs low voltage
dual channel kits, the Corsair Dominator
DDR3-1600 i7/i5 4GB Dual Channel kit. It is XMP
enabled, sports Corsairs Dominator cooling fins,
and timed at 8-8-8-24. Of course its Vdimm is
1.65v. Will the Dominator dominate? Read on to
see!

Google Chrome OS Preview

SuperSite for Windows posted a preview on Google
Chrome OS
A quote from the article:
Thursday's on campus announcement was the second
major event Google held for its nascent Chrome
OS, and while some have churlishly referred to
the project as vaporware, let's not be silly:
Chrome OS is real, and by just announcing that
it's working on such a thing, Google has already
changed the PC operating landscape and then
some. The question, going forward, is how much
more it will change things. I anticipate seeing
Microsoft lower the pricing on its
functionally-challenged Windows 7 Starter
edition, for example. But if the software giant
is serious about competing with Google, it will
need to do the unthinkable and simply make
Windows 7 Starter available to PC makers for
free. It will go kicking and screaming into such
a future. The only question is how long it
takes.

Seven Cheap Full HD 22-inch
Monitors Review
Tuesday November

|
|
InsideHW.com has compared seven cheap Full HD
22-inch monitors A quote from the article:
We gathered all 22-inch (21.5’’) monitors that
we could with one more condition: price tag
should be below 160€. All monitors are black
with differences in surface finish: matte or
gloss (piano). This is nice change since earlier
combinations of black and grey surfaces weren’t
that much pleasing. All monitors have only one
analog D-Sub, which is expected from low price
models. All displays have 16:9 panel ratio, with
1920x1080 resolution. This will satisfy Full-HD
standard and offer decent performances in new
visually attractive operating systems. All
tested models have decent picture control, which
is important in case you have graphics card that
cannot run new games in resolutions that are
different from monitor’s native resolution. This
means that if you lower game resolution, picture
won’t get stretched but will maintain ratio even
if it is not 16:9. Even specifications of all
monitors are almost the same with only one
difference: declared contrast values…

If we had an award for the "best bang for the

I've taken a look at the Seagate BlackArmor
series of external drives and NAS boxes in the
past, today for review I've got another of the
BlackArmor series, the NAS110. This one is a
single drive NAS box that's very easy to setup
and offers all of the features of multiple drive
NAS boxes. The NAS110 is aimed at those that
want network storage but don't want to spend
hundreds and hundreds of dollars, it's a a
little over $200 in cost and well worth it I
think. I've tested it out, and compared it up
against a few other NAS boxes I've got on hand
and found it to be the fastest of the bunch. So

Is it OK to use OEM Windows on
your own PC? Don't ask Microsoft
Tuesday November
17 @ 08:46:09 GMT +02:00
|
Ed Bott posted an article on the OEM version of
Windows 7
I’m talking about OEM System Builder licenses
for Windows desktop editions. If you look at any
online shopping site that caters to PC
enthusiasts, you’ll find these copies displayed
alongside the upgrade and full license packages
that Microsoft says retail customers are
supposed to buy. My friend and fellow Windows
expert Paul Thurrott just posted a thorough look
at the Windows 7 OEM System Builder package,
complete with pictures. If you’re building your
own PC or looking for installation media that
won’t make you jump through hoops to install it,
this product is extremely attractive, because
it’s significantly less expensive than a full
retail license. The installation media works
almost exactly like a full retail copy of
Windows, except that it can’t be used to perform
upgrades, only a custom (clean) install. After
installation, an OEM copy is essentially
indistinguishable from a retail copy.

OCC has published a review on the
OCZ PC3-12800 OCZ3X1600LV4GK Intel XMP 2x2GB
A quote from the article:
At the 1750Mhz maximum speed, I could run the
modules at the same 8-8-8 latencies. This set of
OCZ modules allowed me to go as tight as 7-7-7
at 1622MHz, so you can get a small bump in
system feel and performance. The price point of
$142, which these modules will be offered at, is
higher than most of the currently available sets
of i5/i7 P55 specific memory kits by between $15
and $35. This set of modules most likely won't
be for the enthusiast, but for the mainstream
user looking for a step up from the 1333MHz kits
on the market. There are kits with more overhead
available for the enthusiast for a lower price,
but when it comes down to no fuss overclocking
of the memory, the XMP profiles prove beneficial
and offer an increase in performance without the
headaches.

InsideHW.com has compared all DirectX 11
graphics cards currently present on the market
After launch of their high-end models, in form
of Radeon 58XX series, we expected that ATI
would release products that would fill mid and
low range lineup as they did with previous
generation. Except slightly “crippled” 5870 in
form of 5850, we had chance to test two graphics
cards from mid range: 5770 and 5750. Good news
is that all 57XX graphics cards also support
DX11 with Shader model 5, hardware tessellation
and ATI Eyefinity technologies…

The HD4890 iCooler x4 edition from HIS can be
easily summed up as a performance bargain for
US$179 at the time of this review. For those not
interested in DX11 gaming and its related
expensive videocards, the HD4890 is still a
potent performer for the enthusiast gamer. The

TweakTown posted a review on the Sapphire Radeon
HD 5870 1GB Vapor-X Video Card A quote from
the article:
The main focus of the Vapor-X series is cooling.
With that said, though, it doesn't mean Sapphire
can't have a bit of fun with the clock speeds.
What we’ll do before we have a closer look at
those clocks is check out what's going on in the
bundle. After that we'll then take a closer look
at the card and see the new cooler that Sapphire
is giving us.
If all that wasn't exciting enough, the HD 5870
Vapor-X from Sapphire is the first card that's
going to be taken for a spin on our new
benchmark setup. While the hardware hasn't
changed due to the simple fact it's still some
of the best on the market, we have moved to the
new DirectX 11 enabled Windows 7 and also added
a whole slew of new benchmarks including some
new synthetic ones and real world games.
