Diamond's Viper Radeon HD 3650 1GB Graphics Card - Tested

HotHardware posted a review on Diamond's Viper
Radeon HD 3650 1GB Graphics Card
While the average PC enthusiast may gawk
endlessly over pages of reviews of high-end
power-hungry graphics cards, jaw-slackened by
the frame rates and 3DMark score that he or she
might find there, at the end of the month it is
the low to mid-range card that is purchased more
often than not in the retail sector. Price
typically is a primary consideration, but it's
not the only concern. Availability,
compatibility, and other issues factor in to a
buyers decision as well. Today we take a look at
Diamond's lower cost, mainstream Radeon HD 3650
that increases total on-board memory to 1
GB, but in doing so, uses lower cost, slower
GDDR2 chips. In the pages ahe
ad, we'll aim to find out if additional on-board
memory really impacts perf
ormance more so than a smaller footprint of
faster GDDR3 memory. The answer may definitely
surprise you...

MSI GeForce 9600GT 1GB OC
Graphics Card Review
Tuesday , May 06
@ 08:57:24 GMT +02:00
|
TweakTown posted a review on the MSI GeForce
9600GT 1GB OC Graphics Card
A quote from the article:
We saw MSI mix it up just the other week with
the 9600GT by overclocking it and going down the
aftermarket cooler route. Aesthetically
speaking, the card really didn?t do a lot for
us, but as we dived deeper into the testing of
the card we became pleasantly surprised by the
performance the cooler offered.
The latest 9600GT variant from MSI sports the
same cooler along with an extra 512MB of GDDR3,
giving us a grand total of 1GB. The card also
carries with it the same overclock we saw on the
512MB model which should aid in getting some
extra performance over stock clocked offerings.

Intel Core 2 Quad CPUs Side By

InsideHW.com has posted an article about Intel
Core 2 Quad CPUs Side By Side.
A quote from the article:
This time we've compared two CPUs: Core2Quad
Q9300 (this is the bottom model of current
lineup) and Core2Extreme QX9650 (the top model
of current lineup). We have experimented with
QX9650, bringing down its multiplier so we got
whole palette of Core2Quad processors from Q9x50
generation. To make evaluation of performances
we have included in test even Core2Extreme
QX6850 which is the top model Quad CPU from
previous generation (65nm).

Don't slipstream XP sp3 on Windows Vista
Tuesday , May 06

Bink.nu reports that the XP SP3 slipstream
process on a Windows Vista machine is not
working properly
So I build a new Windows XP ISO with SP3
integrated, this is a Volume License editions (VOL)
which only accepts Volume License Keys (VLK).
When I want to install it on a clean machine, I
noticed that setup prompts for a product key and
it does not allow me to continue, which should
be a new feature in XP sp3. OK so I fill in the
VLK but it does not accept it, I try another one
from a customer of mine, does not work either.

Thermolab Micro Silencer Review
Tuesday , May 06
@ 08:37:24 GMT +02:00
|
OCC has published a new review of the Thermolab
Micro Silencer
A quote from the article:
As you can see, this cooler was outperformed by
the other heatsinks, except for the Nano
Silencer, in each test. When you take a look at
the size difference between the Micro Silencer
and the other heatsinks it was compared to, it
should not have been able to beat them or even
come close. However, again taking a look at its
size, it is able to remove the heat off of the
processor better than the stock cooler provided
by Intel.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
Processor Review
Tuesday
April 29
@ 08:54:25 GMT +02:00
|
HotHardware.com posted a review on the Intel
Core 2 Quad Q9300 Processor
A quote from the article:
Intel's Core 2 Quad Q9300 has some rather large
shoes to fill. This newly shipping, relatively
low-cost quad-core processor from Intel is a
replacement for their long-standing price to
performance champ, the Core 2 Quad Q6600. The
Q6600 was the first quad-core in Intel's arsenal
which was actually affordable, and even today,
it remains one of the best values on the market.
Not only is the Core 2 Quad Q6600 inexpensive
for a quad-core CPU, but it is extremely
overclockable and provides a significant amount
of computing power for the dollar. Core 2 Quad
Q6600's are still in high-demand - a trend which
is likely to continue until they are no longer
available.
Like we said, rather large shoes to fill.
Luckily, the Core 2 Quad Q9300 processor has
some impressive new features under the hood
along with a higher clock speed. Head on over to
the site and check it out...

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 Review
Tuesday,
April 15
@ 08:52:05 GMT +02:00
|
OCC has published a new
review of the Intel Core
2 Quad Q9450
A quote from the
article:
Am I disappointed in the
overclocking headroom
available from this
processor. Not in the
least! With the insane
speeds being offered up
by the dual core
variants, I was still
searching for a bit more
than the 3.7GHz I was
able to pull from this
quad core processor. But
even though I was
expecting more, a
greater than 1 GHz
overclock is nothing to
laugh at. The clockspeed
increase was also done
with a relatively low
1.36 volts to the
processor. Much less
than I have needed with
both my Q6600 and
QX9770s to gain the
maximum core speed.
Temperatures were, for
the most part, kept in
check throughout the
testing. 64 degrees
Celsius under load was
the highest temperature
I saw on air cooling
during my stability
testing with Prime 95.
With better cooling,
could the max overclock
be increased? Probably,
but the vast majority of
users will be on air, so
that's where I spent my
time testing.

AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition
Review
Tuesday,
April 15
@ 08:30:19 GMT +02:00
|
TechSpot posted a review on the AMD Phenom X4
9850 Black Edition
A quote from the article:
In terms of performance, AMD has stated that the
new B3 processors will be no faster than the
original Phenom X4 CPUs without the TLB erratum
fix enabled on a clock-for-clock basis.
Therefore the Phenom X4 9600 and the new Phenom
X4 9650, for example, should be no different in
terms of performance. Just as well that should
mean that today's flagship Phenom, the X4 9850,
should sit somewhere between the Phenom 9700 and
9900 processors that we reviewed earlier this
year.
It will be interesting to see how the 9850
stacks up against the rest of the Phenom family
and of course, Intel's Q6600.

Nvidia Analyst's Day: Biting

|
Bit-Tech published their
analysis of what was
said during Nvidia's
Financial Analyst's Day
in an article titled
Nvidia Analyst's Day:
Biting Back at Intel
Gelsinger believes that
the industry needs a
programmable, ubiquitous
and unified
architecture... like
Larrabee. This is of
course convenient, but
he seems to forget that
we've had very
programmable and unified
architectures ever since
the launch of the
GeForce 8800 GTX in
November 2006.
DirectX 10 was an
inflection point for
graphics cards, because
it is the first time
that shader units have
become fully generalised
processing 'cores'.
Although it's worth
remembering that they're
not quite as flexible as
a CPU core in their
current design.
"/ /Here's somebody
who's new to our
industry and he's
basically telling us
that 3D graphics as we
know it is dead," said
Huang. "//This is the
most inspirational quote
I can imagine giving to
our employees. Nothing
fires us up more than
that. I'm sure that's
what he intended --
getting the most
intensively competitive
company in technology
fired up. We're pretty
fired up anyway, as
we're pretty passionate
about what we do. The
fact that the statement
is just plain wrong
means it's pointless to
argue about it."

Early Look: Gigabyte P45-DS5
motherboard
Tuesday,
April 15
@ 08:04:19 GMT +02:00
|
Bit-Tech published an early look at Gigabyte's
P45-DS5 motherboard
Gigabyte has done *a lot* to improve the P45's
layout over its previous P35 board -- while we
loved the DS3R, other products like the EP35-DS4
(pictured right, on the left of the two) had
compatibility problems with the SATA ports.
The P45-DS5 fixes this by making all the SATA
ports at 90 degree angles to the edge of the
board so they don't conflict with longer
graphics cards. In addition to this there are
now *ten* SATA ports -- four of which are from a
Silicon Image chipset. While the RAID can't be
combined with the new ICH10R southbridge, they
all offer NCQ, ACHI and eSATA support.
The Gigabyte branded JMicron chipset provides
the IDE port which is still missing from ICH10,
like it was from ICH9, and even though the IDE
port is awkwardly placed right down the bottom
of the board it shouldn't matter too much since
there's oodles of SATA for optical drives.
The DS5 shown here is DDR2 only and supports "up
to 1,200MHz" according to Gigabyte. If the
current P35 range is anything to go by, expect
DDR3 and mixed DDR2/DDR3 boards to pop up as
well.
Even though Gigabyte says the overclocking of
the P45 and P35 should be similar, clearly
Gigabyte are tailored its P45-DS5 for some
serious overclocking: it features six phases of
CPU power regulation, two phases on the
northbridge and two phases on the DDR2 memory
slots. We also love the new on-board power,
reset and clear CMOS buttons that are almost
identical those used on the Asus Republic of
Gamer series motherboards.

Elite Bastards posted a review on the ASUS
Striker II NSE motherboard
A quote from the article:
Memory support is the one and only difference
between the nForce 790i SLI and Ultra SLI
chipset - While the standard nForce 790i SLI
officially supports memory speeds of up to
1333MHz, the 790i Ultra SLI can make use of
speeds up to 2000MHz. In short then, while both
boards support EPP 2.0, the nForce 790i SLI
chipset is identical to its bigger brother aside
from officially supporting memory clocks above
1333MHz, so if running insane memory clock
speeds doesn't interest you, then this chipset
will suit your needs without burning quite such
a large hole in your wallet.

Tweaknews.net posted a review on the Microsoft
Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
A quote from the article:
Notebook mice are getting more and more popular.
They offer 100% of the functionality of a
standard mouse, but have it all packed into a
smaller package. In addition, seeing that most
laptop buyers are consumers that like to be
unplugged and free to roam (hence why you buy a
laptop), it is only common sense that a wireless
mouse would make a smart purchase.

ATI and NVIDIA - Video playback quality and performance analysis

Elite Bastards posted a video playback quality
and performance analysis of ATI and NVIDIA based
GPUs
Although playing back DVD content is easy enough
with any modern CPU now, the advent of High
Definition content and the rise of Blu-Ray as
the winner of the next-generation optical format
war have brought new and far more demanding
computing requirements to the PC marketplace.
While a CPU alone will struggle to handle High
Definition content recorded in 1080p, modern
GPUs are ideally designed and placed to take
most of that workload away from the CPU, which
means that the latest generations of graphics
boards from both NVIDIA and AMD's ATI graphics
division are capable of accelerating most if not
all of a High Definition video stream.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500, E8400 and E8200 Review

bit-tech published a review of Intel Core 2 Duo
E8500, E8400 and E820
A quote from the article:
Just like the QX9650 and QX9770 the 45nm
products are the ones to aim for if you're
considering and Intel upgrade, however /unlike/
the Extreme Edition CPUs, the Wolfdales are
*affordable*. In fact, every CPU featured was
affordable, the only exception is the Q6700 at
?311.
If you're heavily into multi-threaded
applications or serious multi-tasking, then a
quad-core processor will offer a greater
performance and space to breath. If you're a
gamer though, a high clocked dual-core with
plenty of memory bandwidth is certainly the way
to go - the Wolfdales will oblige in every
aspect.

InsideHW.com has posted an article about XGX
780i SLI motherboard.
A quote from the article:
After ASUS introduced its premiere motherboard,
we received the XFX vision of what a nForce 780i
chipset-based motherboard should look like. Of
course, the packaging is top-notch, just like
earlier XFX models we had tested, and besides
the motherboard, inside you will find an extra
fan to keep the chipset cool, six black SATA
cables, three SATA power cables, a rounded black
IDE cable, manual, driver disc, a USB bracket
and SLI bridges (an ordinary one and a three-way
one).

WiFi Hotspot Surfers Beware: Sharks Patrol These Waters
Thursday

|
Don't forget the Day-Glo orange life preserver.
WiFi features are as standard on today's
portable computers as built-in modems used to
be. Laptop users have become accustomed to the
ability to connect to the Internet from
practically anywhere to reach e-mail, Web sites
and music download portals. Consumers even use
wireless routers to connect to the Internet from
anywhere in their homes. The problem, however,
is that many portable computer users are
completely clueless about the dangers of
unprotected WiFi connections. They think that
they can surf the Net with the same impunity as
having a wired connection.
