Hyper-V is installed in the add features section of the add or remove programs dialog. To get there we need to open a run box by pressing Win+R, now type appwiz.cpl and press enter. You could also get to the Programs and Features box through Control Panel or the Start search, but this is easy and geeky.

Tuesday October 11 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
MakeUseOf shows you 5 easy ways to remove Windows bloat on your PC
It’s a fact of life for most Windows users that as the weeks go by with a PC in regular use, things just start to accumulate, the OS becomes more bloated and everything just seems to take forever to run. Personally, I just format the whole thing and start again – but for most people I realize that might not be a practical solution. So what are some way to trim the fat, remove PC bloat, and have Windows running at top form again?

Note: A lot of these apps and methods highlighted do pretty serious things to your computer, so I hope it goes without saying that you should have a full bootable system backup before attempting any of them. You have been warned!

Chrome Remote Desktop 1.2.20109.8300 BETA
Tuesday October 11 @ 08:36:10 GMT +02:00
Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is the first installment on a capability allowing users to remotely access another computer through the Chrome browser or a Chromebook.

The goal of this beta release is to demonstrate the core Chrome Remoting technology and get feedback from users. This version enables users to share with or get access to another computer by providing a one-time authentication code. Access is given only to the specific person the user identifies for one time only, and the sharing session is fully secured. One potential use of this version is the remote IT helpdesk case. The helpdesk can use the Chrome Remote Desktop BETA to help another user, while conversely a user can receive help by setting up a sharing session without leaving their desk. Additional use cases such as being able to access your own computer remotely are coming soon.

Chrome Remote Desktop BETA is fully cross-platform, so you can connect any two computers that have a Chrome browser, including Windows, Linux, Mac and Chromebooks.

Simple Port Forwarding 3.2.6
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Whether you don't understand how to forward ports, or your simply looking for an easier way to forward ports then this program is for you. Simple Port Forwarding works with webpages and not directly with your router making it a safe program to use. Supports 52 Languages and 1700+ routers.

Simple Port Forwarding works with WebPages and not directly with your router. Making it a safe program to use. Its no different than using Firefox, IE or any other browser to setup port forwarding yourself.

The program works by automating the process for you. So whether you don't understand how to forward ports, or your simply looking for an easier way to forward ports then this program is for you.

Its port forwarding made simple.

The main interface of the program is small and clean. Giving options of seeing what is going to be forwarded to the router and how many entries and ports it will use in the process. You have the ability to save your list and send it to another user of the program. An example would be, lets say you have a family member who lives far from you and doesn't really understand port forwarding, so instead of spending a lot of time over the phone walking them through it you can simply have them use the program and have them load the list and update their router, then your all done. Now that's a time saver.

The program has a large database of known ports for over 700+ games and programs, so finding the port you need is made a little easier.
The program will also remember custom applications you put in, so you don't have to reenter them. The program remembers the last IP address you use to forward to, this helps not having to set it every time you load new ports!

The program has many extra tools, such as a tool to set your IP to static or back to DHCP. When port forwarding the router forwards to an IP address. When DHCP is enabled your IP address can change and thus breaking the port forwarding. By setting your IP to static it never changes. I added this tool to make setting a static IP as easy as possible for people instead of manually doing it on there systems (Which if a person has never done it before can be a little intimidating). The Program also makes adding the ports to the windows firewall as easy as a few clicks! Once you have your ports forwarded you can then test to see if they can be accessed right from with in the program using the built in port tester.

Steve Jobs 'expected' to appear at Apple's iPhone 5 event - report
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Apple Insider posted a story that Steve Jobs is "expected" to appear at Tuesday's iPhone event alongside current Chief Executive Tim Cook
The information stems from a Reuters story filed on Monday, which suggested Jobs will appear at this week's iPhone event. However, the report also cautioned that "a no-show by the Apple co-founder will not be a major disappointment."

Author Poornima Gupta did not indicate whether the expectations of an appearance by Jobs come from inside information obtained through sources, or if rumors of an appearance by Jobs are simply speculation on the part of Wall Street analysts quoted in the story.

Corsair Force GT 240GB Solid State Drive Review
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:41:01 GMT +02:00
TweakTown posted a review on the Corsair Force GT 240GB Solid State Drive
A quote from the article:

As with any product, the more time you put into refining it, the better the end result. Reference designs may go through several revisions before they will reach optimal performance. That said, as time passes small issues that can cause problems in rare instances are isolated and solutions are implemented on an ongoing basis to make products better.

Corsair has shared with us their approach in fine tuning their PCB design for the new Force 3 and Force GT products. We've been told this approach increases the clarity of the timing signal and thus should enhance the overall reliability. Corsair has also made some other changes to the Force 3 and Force GT lineup since we reviewed the 120GB capacity sizes of these models.

GIGABYTE Aivia M8600 Wireless Macro Gaming Mouse Review
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:36:10 GMT +02:00
Vortez posted a review on the GIGABYTE Aivia M8600 Wireless Macro Gaming Mouse
A quote from the article:

What makes the move even braver is the fact that this mouse is anything but a budget entry. Tipping the scales at a costly £80 it is right up there with some very stiff competition. Granted wireless gaming mice are never a cheap option and not normally as advanced as wired gaming mice so to price the A VIA M8600 so high is begging the questions ‘What’s so special about it?’ ‘Can it compete with the best mice out there?’ ‘Is it worth it?’ - Questions I will seek to answer by the end of this review.

In Depth: How Ubuntu is built: the inside story
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:25:24 GMT +02:00
Techradar takes an in-depth look at how Ubuntu is built
Every six months we release a new version of Ubuntu. Each one brings together hundreds of developers, translators, testers and documentation writers to integrate the latest and greatest upstream applications, as well as new and innovative Ubuntu technologies.

Building and releasing a new operating system every six months is hectic. Really hectic. However, since 2004, when we founded the project, we've striven to get the very best out of everyone who participates in building Ubuntu, ensuring that each release is as good as it can be.

This article explains how this organised chaos works and provides an insight into how Ubuntu is put together. Everything is encased in a rigorous release cycle, made up of a series of important milestones, which are always publicly available. Let's get started by looking at the start of a new cycle.

Windows 8 In Videos: An Operating System Reimagined?
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:16:29 GMT +02:00
Tom's Hardware posted an in-depth review on the Windows 8 Developer Preview
Microsoft showed off a pre-beta build of Windows 8 at its BUILD conference in last September. We got our hands on a copy and took it for a spin in the lab. Is the company's effort to unify PCs, phones, tablets, and its gaming console actually coherent?

Windows 8 was formally unveiled at Computex 2011. However, it wasn’t until more recently that Microsoft released a build to the public.

Before you dismiss this version of Windows, there’s more to Microsoft's announcement than just an obligatory operating system upgrade. The successor to Windows 7 carries with it the company's hope of attracting more developers for tablets and smartphones. That’s clearly the driving force behind a new interface better suited to touchscreen input.

ASUS GTX580 DirectCU II Graphics Card Review
Tuesday October 04 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
OCIA.net has posted their review of the ASUS GTX580 DirectCU II Graphics Card
A quote from the article:

I've looked at a couple of video cards over the past few months, each being more powerful (and expensive) than the previous. It all started with MSI's R6850 which retailed for $177.99 at the time of our review. Next on the list was the ASUS GTX560 Ti which showed a marked improvement over the slower AMD offering, albeit at roughly $75 more expensive. Today we will bump things up to the higher-end of the spectrum as we analyze the ASUS GTX580 DirectCU II graphics card, a $500 premium GPU featuring a core clock of 782 MHz, 512 processor cores and an effective memory clock of 4008 MHz. This card is factory overclocked by 10 MHz (772 MHz reference) but ASUS also offers a higher factory overclocked version of this card at 816 MHz.

Windows Phone DOES transmit location information without user consent
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Hardware 2.0 posted a story that statements made by Microsoft to the US House of Representatives prove to be at odds with how its Windows Phone OS actually works.

Earlier this month Microsoft was hit with a lawsuit which claimed that the new Windows Phone OS tracked users without their consent. Now new evidence has come to light which seems to prove that there is some substance to this lawsuit.

Enter Rafael Rivera, one of the programmer behind the Windows Phone jailbreaking tool ChevronWP. After initially being skeptical about the lawsuit, Rivera decided to test the Windows Phone camera app to see what information, if any, it sent to Microsoft when the phone was reset to the ‘out-of-box’ experience.

Corsair H100 Hydro Series Review
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Vortez posted Corsair H100 Hydro Series Review
A quote from the article:

Dubbed "Extreme Performance", Corsair have gone all-out to bring the best performance possible at a more favourable pricing compared to custom kits. The H100 bundles two high RPM 120mm fans that can have their speeds adjusted and the 120.2 radiator means that two further fans can be installed for even better performance. Unlike the H80 or H70, the radiator is a thin one but the sheer size is enough to promise good performance. The question is whether it can dethrone our top air coolers.

VMware Fusion 4 hands-on: Lion, Windows 7, Windows 8, and more
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:25:24 GMT +02:00
Ars Technica posted a review on VMWare Fusion 4

Virtualization has long been important for Mac users, especially those who have to manage multiple platforms for their work. With Apples small share of the desktop market, virtual machines are a necessity for Mac users who cant get by without access to Windows applications.

While virtual machine products from the likes of VMware, Parallels, and VirtualBox provide convenient ways to run Windows and other operating systems on your Mac, Apples recent upgrade to OS X Lion has the software makers scrambling to ship updates. VMware and Parallels have both released new versions that let Windows applications integrate with Lion-specific features such as Launchpad and Mission Control, and take advantage of Apples decision to let users run additional instances of Lion in virtual machines.

AMD Catalyst 11.8 Driver Analysis
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
eTeknix.com posted an AMD Catalyst 11.8 Driver Analysis

Sorry for being a bit delayed on this one, but it’s here none the less, and that in our eyes is better than having no driver analysis at all, don’t you agree?
In terms of AMD, we all know they’ve been focussing all of their energy and most likely anger on their new range of CPU’s; Bulldozer and due to this, we haven’t seen any new graphics cards from the market leader, but that’s generally the case for this time of year and we don’t expect much else. What we do expect is occasional updates to the driver software which can fix bugs and sometimes even give a nice performance boost.
So as another month passes, we see Catalyst 11.8 drivers being released with quite a few goodies included. The first includes new features which mainly comes down to AMD Overdrive supporting CPU and GPU overclocking controls within AMD Vision Control Center whilst the other key points is performance increases in certain games such as Crysis 2 and COD: Black Ops though users of MLAA should see up to a 30% performance increase across the board.
Also as expected, their are several bugs and issues that have been resolved across all key Windows operating systems, which includes XP, Vista and Windows 7 ranging from game fixes as well as benchmark and video playback problems.
In typical fashion, let’s break it down and see if these particular drivers have had any impact on our set of gaming benchmarks.

How Windows 8 is faster, lighter and more efficient
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Techradar posted an article how Windows 8 is faster, lighter and more efficient

Windows 8: faster and lighterNever mind Windows 8's Metro interface and the inevitable iPad comparisons. Just as significant for the future of Windows is the question of what's under the hood. Those Metro apps ? whether they're HTML5 or Silverlight ? are running on a whole new system called WinRT, but the whole of Windows has been significantly improved to boot faster, use less memory, be more secure and handle networks better. We asked the director of Windows program management, Gabriel Aul, to explain how Windows 8 manages to deliver that. For instance, how come the preview version of Windows 8 uses a little over half the memory that the preview version of Windows 7 took up (going from 540MB to 281MB on a 1GB netbook, for example)?

EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Classified Video Card Review
Tuesday September 20 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Legit Reviews posted a review on the EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD Classified Video Card
A quote from the article:

Legit Reviews is going covert and has been granted access to something Classified from EVGA. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 video card has been touted as almost a GeForce GTX 580 at a much nicer price and EVGA throws an decent factory overclock on top of that. If you have the clearance to read this classified information see how much farther LR can push this card without extreme cooling.

We enjoyed the performance of EVGA's top end version of the GeForce GTX 570 and found pushing this overclock further was as simple as dragging a slider in EVGA Precision software and clicking apply. Achieving our significant overclock did require a bit more work to figure out the thermals but now that you have read this you know our trick if you can handle the noise. Better yet get this card under water and you can run at least 31% above reference clocks silently...

Neowin posted a tutorial about changing the Metro background on x64
The new Windows 8 Developer preview offers the first official look at Windows 8 for the general public. This early build was designed to give a high level look at the new Metro UI and because of that, omitted some simple features like the ability to change the background.

Neowin has already covered how to revert back to the standard start menu, but if you want to be able to change the background, the tutorial is posted below. We should not that this is for x64 builds of Windows 8 only, the x86 tutorial is still being developed.

Tuesday September 20 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
Ghacks posted a blog entry that Windows 8 asks after a reinstall sometimes for a product key
You find the answer in a forum thread (!) over at the Microsoft Developer Network forum. A user asked the following question on the forum:
I’m reinstalling Windows Developer Preview and need to enter a product key. What key do I use?

A Microsoft employee replied with this answer:

If you need to reinstall Windows Developer Preview or use the Reset functionality, you might be asked to enter this product key:

6RH4V-HNTWC-JQKG8-RFR3R-36498

If you’re running a server version of Windows Developer Preview, you can use this product key:

Note: These product keys are only for use with the Windows Developer Preview version of Windows 8.

Microsoft to give out Windows 8 build 8100 at BUILD conference
Tuesday September 6 @ 08:25:24 GMT +02:00
Neowin reports that Microsoft will give out the first public build of Windows 8 to developers at BUILD this week, but whether or not it will be available to those who don't attend isn't clear.

We've also heard from independent sources that the build will be a 81xx build, but may not be 8100 on the dot. Only one question remains, will Microsoft make Windows 8 available just to delegates of the conference, or will it be available online? Previously, at Microsoft's PDC conference in 2009, the company gave out copies to delegates but the general public couldn't get their hands on the bits until the OS hit beta. The build given out at the developer conference is not beta.

Vodafone suggests Apple's iPhone 5 will come in 16GB, 32GB capacities
Tuesday September 6 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
Apple Insider posted a story that U.K. carrier Vodafone has implied that Apple's next-generation iPhone will be offered in black and white, and available in the same two capacities it has been for years: 16 and 32 gigabytes.
The product page for the Vodafone Sure Signal, which works as a signal booster for the carrier's network, offers a list of phones compatible with the device. The carrier's site makes mention of four "iPhone 5" models, with capacities of 16GB and 32GB and colors of black and white.

Of course, it's possible that the listing is a typo, or even presumptive. But it does mention in addition the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and even the iPhone 3G first released in 2008.

Seven 8 GB DDR3 Memory Kits For Your AMD A75 Motherboard
Tuesday September 6 @ 08:25:24 GMT +02:00
Tom's Hardware Guide takes a look at seven 8 GB DDR3 Memory Kits for your AMD A75 motherboard

The biggest surprise in AMD’s Llano architecture was its integrated GPU's ability to play real games. And by real games we mean the kinds of titles that people who call themselves enthusiasts like to play. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is actually viable at high quality and 1680x1050. What you need to understand, though, is that gaming performance is largely affected by the memory you drop into a Llano-powered machine, as discussed in Chris Angelini's launch coverage page, “Making Memory Performance Matter Again.”

EVGA Z68 SLI Motherboard Review
Tuesday September 6 @ 08:16:29 GMT +02:00
Hi Tech Legion posted a review on the EVGA Z68 SLI Motherboard

A quote from the article:

The EVGA Z68 SLI is physically identical in layout to EVGA's P67 SLI motherboard. The difference however, is that the EVGA Z68 SLI motherboard is capable of using Intel's Smart Response Technology, an SSD caching feature that marries boosts traditional HDD performance with SSD speeds. The EVGA Z68 SLI can run up to two PCI-E x16 graphic cards with an additional PCI-E x16 at x4 mode underneath for a dedicated PhysX card. Enthusiast features like on-board power, reset, clear CMOS and a debug LED found on the EVGA Z68 FTW are also available on the EVGA Z68 SLI motherboard. Since it carries the Z68 chipset, the EVGA Z68 SLI is capable of using Intel's Smart Response Technology to improve hard drive transfer rates by utilizing a low-cost SSD as a cache drive. Whether you are a tech addict, a habitual overclocker or just a mainstream consumer looking for a reliable motherboard for a new system build, the EVGA Z68 SLI mainboard promises to cater to your needs.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC Review
Tuesday September 6 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
TweakTown posted a review on the Deus Ex: Human Revolution PC
A quote from the article:

When it comes to games that PC gamers look on fondly, Deus Ex is right up there. Released by Warren Spectors ION Storm back in the day, Deus Ex was a revolutionary RPG that showed RPG games do not necessarily have to be in a fantasy world to succeed. The unique aspects of melding your character via different technical options and having many different ways to achieve objectives were revolutionary at the time.

The sequel, Infinite War was overhyped and unfortunately left a poor taste in the mouth. Eidos Montreal has been tasked with reinvigorating the franchise for the third outing, and you know what? They just might have succeeded. Deus Ex Human Revolution is a prequel to the original game which has allowed Eidos Montreal a lot of room to design a story that they own rather than being stuck to the events of the previous games, especially the second one.

What Causes the "File Downloaded from the Internet" Warning and How Can I Easily Remove It?
Tuesday August 16 @ 08:16:29 GMT +02:00
Howtogeek explains what causes the "File Downloaded from the Internet" Warning
Whenever you download any file to your hard drive via your browser, Windows automatically flags it as coming from the Internet and potentially dangerous. As a result when you open the respective file, depending on the type, Windows will warn you with a dialog box or prevent the file from executing altogether until you mark it as safe.

Have you ever wondered how Windows keeps track of this flag on these files, how you can easily (bulk) remove it on files you know are safe, and/or add this flag (along with the protection it brings) to any file?

How to Create a Windows 7 System Backup Image & Repair Disk
Tuesday August 16 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
Ghacks shows you how to create a Windows 7 system backup image and repair disk
Creating a system backup image can be extremely useful. If something goes wrong with your Windows 7 installation, you can’t log in, or files have become damaged and corrupted, you can boot directly from your repair disk to rectify the problem. You should note that when you restore from a system backup image, it is a complete restoration, and you won’t be able to choose individual programs or files. However, if you find yourself with a corrupted disk drive, a complete restoration is probably what you want anyway.

To begin the process of creating your system backup image, click on “start” and in the search field, type in the word “backup”. Now you should see under the programs section of the search results a program called “backup and restore”. Click on this and it will open up the utility you need to begin creating a system image.

That isn't all though, this is the first SSD by Kingston using the SATA3 interface. The HyperX SSD first appeared at CES 2011, at the beginning of the year but was only officially announced back in June - indicating that they were holding back and ensuring that the drive was perfect since Sandforce has had issues with Firmware in the past.

Photos of a Prototype MacBook Pro with Integrated 3G Cellular Modem
Tuesday August 16 @ 08:41:01 GMT +02:00
Mac Rumors posted a story that Apple has developed prototypes of the MacBook Pro with integrated 3G data, as evidenced by this eBay sale showing a never-released MacBook Pro prototype.
This particular machine dates back to 2007 and is a 15" MacBook Pro Santa Rosa laptop with a 3G antenna, 3G hardware and SIM card slot built in. The machine was purchased "for parts" from Craigslist by the seller who describes the unit: Upon removing the top case it was immediately clear this was no normal Macbook Pro: the circuit boards inside were bright red as opposed to the normal blue! Further inspection found multiple differences from the stock version, most notably a feature never seen in a Macbook laptop of any kind: what appears to be a fully integrated cellular modem and SIM slot.

Phoronix takes a look at the power consumption of Chrome under Linux

With my recent work in tracking down Linux power regressions and looking at other areas of Linux power consumption, there's been a number of emails sent in by Phoronix readers concerning the power consumption of web-browsers. In particular, some users seem to think that Google's Chrome/Chromium web-browser causes the system to go through noticeably more power than Mozilla Firefox and other web-browsers. But how much is this really the case? Here's some benchmarks.

Google's Motorola acquisition: Microsoft patent case takes a new turn
Tuesday August 16 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
With the Google announcement that it intends to buy Motorola Mobility, the Microsoft vs. Motorola patent battle just took a new turn.
From All About Microsoft:

Microsoft and Motorola have been warring over patents for the past several months. Microsoft sued Motorola on October 1, 2010, over alleged infringement of Motorola’s Android smartphones on Microsoft’s patents. On November 9, Microsoft sued Motorola again over wireless and video coding patents that are used by the Xbox and smartphones. In the latter case, Microsoft claimed that Motorola is charging excessive royalties for its patents.

Motorola retaliated with its own countersuit on November 10, claiming infringement of 16 of its patents by Microsoft’s PC and server software, Windows Mobile and Xbox products.

iPhone 4GS' Test Device Photos?
Tuesday July
19 @ 08:41:01 GMT +02:00
Taiwanese site Apple.pro republishes some photographs originally posted to Weibo, a Chinese microblogging service similar to Twitter.
From MacRumors:

The images claim to be of an "iPhone 4GS" test model running iOS 4.0. The unit appears to be identical to the iPhone 4 with a reported 5 megapixel camera based on the diagnostic software. The iTunes artwork looks different but as some readers have pointed out -- no camera and looks to simply be the original iPod Touch artwork.

Beyond that information, there is little else that seems remarkable about the device, and due to the difficulties in translation, we can't even be sure of all the claims, nor the creditability of the original source. As such, we are posting for discussion and interest alone, and not necessarily that these represent accurate images.

Windows 8 may be the last dance for the brand, a source says
Tuesday July 19 @ 08:16:29 GMT +02:00
Microsoft might re-brand its operating system after Windows 8 with something more suited to the company's aims for total cross-platform integration.
From Digital Trends:

Windows 8 isn’t even out yet and talk is already spinning off in the direction of Windows 9, which apparently won’t be called that. The next next-gen operating system will reportedly be built to function across all of Microsoft‘s platforms, including PCs, tablets, phones and, notably, whatever the next Xbox turns out to be, This Is Next reports via an unnamed source.

The next OS will supposedly launch sometime in the next four years, which lines up with the expected 2014-or-later arrival of the next-generation Xbox. The move would also vibe with comments made at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference earlier this week, where Windows Phone division president Andy Lees said that the company is looking to create “a single ecosystem” for its products. The aim, as he put it, is to provide “coherence and consistency [between platforms]… particularly with Xbox.”

Ballmer: Windows Phone 7 Not Successful Yet
Tuesday July 12 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
While Microsoft has enjoyed many successes over the past year, Windows Phone 7 hasn't been among them, admitted Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer during the opening keynote Monday at the 2011 Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference
From PCWorld:

Last month, survey firm Nielsen estimated that Microsoft Phone 7 was in only about 1 percent of all the handsets now being used in the United States.

Nonetheless, Ballmer maintained confidence that it would enjoy more users in the years to come. "You will see a lot of progress in the market going forward," he said.

Using the Windows operating system, Ballmer seemingly took the opportunity to bash competitor Apple with its success with the iPad, though he did not mention that company by name. He noted that Microsoft had sold more than 350 million licences for Windows 7, while other unnamed companies, presumably Apple, were celebrating success with only 20 million copies of their OS. "350 is a lot more than 20," he said.

Windows 8 builds on sale at eBay auction site
Tuesday July 12 @ 08:36:10 GMT +02:00
WinRumors reports that copies of a Milestone 3 Windows 8 build appeared on eBay recently

Microsoft is currently working on pre-beta copies of Windows 8 in preparation for a beta release at the company’s BUILD developer conference in September. Recent reports suggest that the company reached build 8042 on July 7 and is planning to hit build 8100 for the beta stage. The software maker is also rumored to be preparing a pre-release build of Windows 8 at the Worldwide Partner Conference this week. It’s unlikely that the company will issue a build but it will talk more about Windows 8 and possibly share a second “building Windows 8″ video. Microsoft first introduced Windows 8 at the D9 conference in early June. The company made an initial “Building Windows 8 video #1″ available as part of a series of videos that will be released as the BUILD conference draws closer.

Visual voicemail coming to Windows Phone
Tuesday July 12 @ 08:25:24 GMT +02:00
Neowin.net reports that one of the 500 features coming to the Windows Phone platform with the Mango update is visual voicemail.

The idea of having visual voicemail available as an option is nothing new when comparing it to what other phone operating systems have to offer. The feature is already available on the iPhone and applications are available for use on Google's Android phones. It's no surprise therefore that Microsoft are adding the ability in order to level out the playing field with the competition.

While visual voicemail by itself is not a spectacular feature, it does show how much effort Microsoft is putting into making Mango a significant update for phone users. Along with this new feature, we'll be seeing other useful updates such as Internet Explorer 9, live tiles on the dashboard and the ability to have more than one calendar (including Facebook events).

System Monitor II 11.4
Tuesday July 12 @ 08:16:29 GMT +02:00
Do you want to monitor your computer's health in real-time? Of course you can already do this from Task Manager by pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys but if you want it on your computer desktop always then install the System Monitor II Windows Gadget. It will shows you all core CPU usage (1 Core, 2 Core, 3 Core, 4 Core, 6 Core, 8 Core, 12 Core, 16 Core or 24 Core) and RAM (physical, page file and full, includes virtual) usage. It also displays all cores and RAM usage history and cores temperatures (CoreTemp must be running on the background).

Some users may want to increase the size of the gadget’s display to make it better readable, which can be helpful especially on larger displays. A click on the settings button allows that and a lot more. The size of the gadget window can be resized to every available size. The value is set as a percentage of the default value. But that’s not the only setting and option available in the eight tabs.

From useful double-click actions to spawn the Windows task manager, to changing the display of graphs, color schemes and interface elements, and enabling additional hardware parameters like core temperatures, users who delve into the options find a lot of useful settings. Gadget save settings to file. File will be created - Path: %APPDATA% Filename: gadgetname_Settings.ini

It is furthermore possible to hide specific information from the System Monitor II interface which is helpful if space is of the essence or if those values are not necessarily needed.

System Monitor II is a great gadget for Vista and Windows 7. Mainly because it combines the most important hardware information in one highly configurable interface, and because its option to launch the task manager with a double-click. That’s really helpful to check a peaking value in the task manager. The gadget is compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.

Apple's iPad 2: Conservative, Inconsistent, but I'm Loving it
Tuesday July 5 @ 08:16:29 GMT +02:00
OSNews posted a review on Apple's iPad 2

Even though I was extremely sceptical of this whole tablet thing, I bought an iPad 2 a few weeks ago. Obviously, this occasion couldn't pass by without a proper review of the thing on OSNews, so here we are. Inside, my view on the iPad 2, and more importantly, how my perception of tablets has been turned around completely.

With relatively long reviews like this I generally prefer to dive into history a little bit, to establish context and provide some background. When it comes to tablets, I've already written that history, so I decided to re-print it here for convenience's sake. If you've already read the article on the history of tablets, you can skip straight to page 3 to dive into the actual review.

Fotosizer 1.32.0.499
Tuesday June 28 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Fotosizer is a freeware batch image resizer tool. It resizes your photos in just 3 easy steps - 1. Photo selection, 2. select resize settings, then 3. Start the resize!

Increasingly, sharing photos on the internet is becoming more and more popular. Photos, represented as JPEG files from digital cameras, taken at high resolutions are far too large to send over the Internet, with some photos ending up at 5 mega bytes. Uploading one photo to a photo sharing website is fine, but 10, 20, or even more, this can take forever, especially on a dial-up connection.

With Fotosizer, you can shrink JPEG image files, along with other supported formats, and dramatically reduce internet transfer times, enabling you to quickly and easily prepare your image collections to be published on the web.

Help unlock the photos from your digital camera. Use Fotosizer to batch resize your photos making it easier and faster to email to friends, upload to photo sharing websites or upload to websites that offer photo printing services.

Fotosizer lets you resize in 3 easy steps, allowing you to choose the photos you want to resize, the dimensions, and where you want to save the new photos.

Main Features:

Batch resizingChoose to resize by percentage of width and height
Choose to set custom width and height
Maintain aspect ratio
Choose where the resized images will be saved
Change image quality
Parameterised output filenames: Choose the format of the output filenames using parameters such as new image width/height, current date, number of image in the list being resized.

(Not so) Crazy Microsoft Rumors: Windows 8 to RTM in April 2012
Tuesday June 28 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
Todays single-sourced but trusted tip claims that Windows 8 will RTM in April 2012.

From All About Microsoft:

It’s been a while since I blogged about another of my (not so) crazy Microsoft rumors. It’s also been a while since I’ve heard any kind of an update on Windows 8 timing. In that spirit — here’s the latest, plus the ground rules for those weighing how believable this information may or may not be.

As part of my job as a full-time Microsoft watcher, I get a lot of tips about Microsoft from customers, competitors, partners and even some Softies themselves. However, ever since I worked for PCWeek as a reporter close to 20 years ago, I had it drilled into my head that until I could get three independent sources — none of whom was repeating something s/he heard in an echo chamber — to corroborate a tip, I couldn’t run it as a story.

The Leading Cause Of The Recent Linux Kernel Power Problems
Tuesday June
28 @ 08:41:01 GMT +02:00
Phoronix takes a look at the leading cause of the recent Linux Kernel power problems

Mobile users are urged to seriously consider these results, and possibly even avoid the Natty Narwhal...I hate to say it, especially in an Ubuntu review, but the mobile edge goes to Windows for now...There are also compelling reasons for folks to avoid [Ubuntu 11.04] at all costs. Linux gamers should see substantial improvements, while mobile users suffer a dramatic loss in battery life," were among the critical comments that Tom's Hardware had in their Ubuntu 11.04 review as they were referencing the power regressions I discovered nearly two months ago within the mainline Linux kernel. As I mentioned on Sunday, the Phoronix Test Suite stack and I have now nailed this major power regression in the Linux 2.6.38 kernel that is affecting a significant number of mobile Linux users. Here is what is happening and a way that you should be able to workaround the serious regression should it affect your computer system(s).

Tutorial: How to make old games work on Windows 7
Tuesday June 28 @ 08:36:10 GMT +02:00
Techradar posted an article about making old games work on Windows 7

Getting old games running should be easy. Those old system requirements? Irrelevant! The tools at our disposal? Endless! We've got virtual machines and emulators and online fan projects and - cough - eBay access to damn near everything ever released and everything else we could ever want. Indeed, 90 per cent of the time, getting an old classic up and running is a piece of cake. Sod's law being what it is, though, the game you really want to play will usually land in that fiddly other 10 per cent, and when that happens, you're on your own. Well, no longer. Over the next few pages, we'll show you how to get almost any old game back up and running on your PC, starting with simple 'just work, please' instructions to DOSBox, and scaling up to deal with the Four Horsemen of Incompatibility: Windows, QuickTime, DirectX and 3D. We say 'almost', because unfortunately some games just won't play ball. If you want to be absolutely, positively certain, you don't have much choice but to head to eBay and actually hunt down or put together a new system using decades-old technology.

Skype Beta 5.5.0.110
Tuesday June 21 @ 08:45:50 GMT +02:00
With Skype’s free software – by the way, it works seamlessly with your internet connection – you can chat away with free Skype-to-Skype calls and never worry about cost, time or distance. Share the love and get your friends to download Skype so you can talk, chat or make video calls for nothing. You can also make local, long distance and international calls to phones and mobiles at great rates too.

Skype is jam-packed with great features to help you stay in touch with friends, family and co-workers, share your thoughts and find the information you need.

You can use it on a computer or get Skype on your mobile so you can keep in touch on the move, whatever you’re up to. Skype works on a wide range of mobiles, plus on devices like the PlayStation Portable (PSP). There’s also a great range of WiFi and cordless phones with Skype built-in.

Just for starters you can instant message with anyone on your contact list or even use group chat to chat with up to a hundred people. You could hold a conference call with up to nine other people to organise a get-together and then use SkypeFind to search for the perfect venue to hold it.

There are also really cool video features. All you need is a webcam to make free video calls or even take photos of yourself to personalise Skype.

If you use Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, GMail, Hotmail or your mail account with Yahoo! then it’s a simple task to import contacts and get them all onto your Skype. If they don’t have Skype yet you can send them invite to download it – then you can talk for free (and maybe you’ll even get a nice bouquet of flowers and a chocolate bar from them to say thanks for getting them onto Skype? We’d like to think that’s in order).

Got friends on MySpace? Get them to download Skype or MySpace’s version of Skype. Then add them to your Skype contact list and you’ve got even more people to talk to for free. Simply search for them in Skype and click the MySpaceIM tab in the search results.

Adding someone to your contact list is easy. But you can also add people who are not yet on Skype and call them on their phones and mobiles at pretty cheap rates wherever they are.

Also, if your Microsoft Outlook contacts have phone numbers, you can have them show up on your contact list so you can call them. You’ll need Skype Credit or a monthly subscription to make calls to phones and mobiles.

The business version of Skype has the same features as the standard version; however, it also includes Windows Installer (commonly known as MSI) which makes it easy to install Skype across your company.

Use Skype to give your friends a call and voice chat with them at the highest quality on the market.

From v3.co.uk:

"We have been able to confirm the existence of one such attack that involves a compromised web site hosting content for a neighborhood restaurant," he added.
"It appears that a duplicate of the top page of the website was either hacked to include a hidden iframe tag linking to an exploit page or was prepared from scratch, which, if run successfully, the included shell code downloads an encrypted malicious file from the same site."

Windows 8 includes Powershell 3.0 and AppX distribution cmdlets
Tuesday June 21 @ 08:25:24 GMT +02:00
Windows 8 includes an updated version of Powershell which supports AppX distribution.
From WinRumors:

AppX is Microsoft’s new method for packaging and deploying applications in Windows 8. It is believed that the software giant is preparing an application model codenamed “Jupiter”. The model would allow developers to create native applications that can be easily deployed using AppX packaging. The container method is similar to Microsoft’s Silverlight-based application package (XAP). XAPs are generated from Silverlight projects and include the application assembly itself and an application manifest XAML file. The manifest file contains deployment details required to run the application. Microsoft appears to have a similar deployment method with AppX. The software giant uses AppXManifest.xml files for ease of deployment in Windows 8. The file includes all the necessary deployment information require to run the application.

Mozilla Firefox 3 - 3.6.1.8
Tuesday June 21 @ 08:05:12 GMT +02:00
Mozilla Firefox - Your web, the way you like it: high performance, easy customization and advanced security.

Features:

Anti-Malware
Firefox protects you from viruses, worms, trojan horses and spyware delivered over the Web. If you accidentally access an attack site, it will warn you away from the site and tell you why it isn’t safe to use.

Anti-Phishing
Shop and do business safely on the Internet. Firefox gets a fresh update of web forgery sites 48 times in a day, so if you try to visit a fraudulent site that’s pretending to be a site you trust (like your bank), a browser message—big as life—will stop you.

Instant Web Site ID
Want to be extra sure about a site’s legitimacy before you make a purchase? Click on a site favicon for an instant identity overview. Another click digs deeper: how many times have you visited? Are your passwords saved? Check up on suspicious sites, avoid Web forgeries and make sure a site is what it claims to be.

Forget This Site
Having second thoughts about having visited a certain Web site? With this feature, you can remove every trace of that site from your browser—no questions asked!

Parental Controls
Enforce parental control settings you’ve entered on Windows 7 — stop unwanted downloads and more.

Outdated Plug-In Detection
Some web pages require that you install small applications called plugins to watch videos, play games or view documents. These plugins are written by other companies, and it can be hard to make sure they’re always up to date. Since outdated plugins are a security risk, Firefox will let you know when you have a plugin that’s vulnerable to attack and direct you to the right site to get the updated version. View our plugin check page.

Clear Recent History
Clear all your private data or just your activity over the past few hours with a few quick clicks. You have full control over what to delete, and then your info is gone for good—on your own computer or the one at your local library. It’s that easy.

Private Browsing
Sometimes it’s nice to go undercover, so turn this feature on and protect your browsing history. You can slip in and out of private browsing mode quickly, so it’s easy to go back to what you were doing before as if nothing ever happened. It’s great if you’re doing your online banking on a shared computer or checking email from an Internet café.

Customized Security Settings
Control the level of scrutiny you’d like Firefox to give a site and enter exceptions—sites that don’t need the third degree. Customize settings for passwords, cookies, loading images and installing add-ons for a fully empowered Web experience.

Add-ons
Firefox looks for a secure connection before installing or updating add-ons, 3rd party software, and Personas.

Anti-Virus Software
Firefox integrates elegantly with your Windows antivirus software. When you download a file, your computer’s antivirus program automatically checks it to protect you against viruses and other malware, which could otherwise attack your computer.

FireTune for Mozilla Firefox was developed for an easy and fast optimization of your browsing experience with Firefox.
