7 & Vista 1.0
Tuesday October
20 @ 09:07:55 GMT +02:00
|
Designed to minimize your trouble in accessing
control panel programs.
We are pleased to release Access Panel for
Windows 7 & Vista. While you can use Control
Panel to change settings which control nearly
everything about how Windows looks and works, in
some cases to access these very controls , or
the in-built Windows programs, requires you to
engage in multiple clicks or know their names.
Windows Access Panel v 1.0 is meant to minimize
your trouble in accessing such programs. It has
been tested on Windows 7 & Windows Vista. It can
simply be downloaded and used as a portable
application. Place it in your Programs Files and
Pin its shortcut to your Start menu and you are
all set to a faster way of accessing the
“hidden” Windows utilities.
For instance, WAP will save you a couple of
clicks if you want to open any program, like
maybe the Disk Defragmentation utility. Or maybe
you don’t know that to open the Backup or
Restore Usernames & Passwords Wizard you need to
type credwiz in the start search and hit Enter!
48 such programs have been included in WAP v
1.0.

Intel Core i5 750 Review
Tuesday October
20 @ 08:51:30 GMT +02:00
|
|
InsideHW.com has reviewed Intel Core i5 750 CPU
A quote from the article:
Code name for Core i5 is Lynnfield and it is
made in 45nm manufacturing process. Core i5 does
not support Hyper Threading, which means that
Task Manager in Windows will show real number of
cores present in CPU. Most users won’t notice
any significant difference in performance levels
compared to similar CPUs with Hyper Threading.
Good news is that this CPU has integrated memory
and PCIe controller, which will provide great
performance levels…

|
|
TechSpot posted Dual Boot Windows 7 with
XP/Vista in three easy steps Windows 7 has
proved to be quite the drastic improvement over
Vista, enough that it even has XP stragglers
crawling out of the woodwork to check it out.
Your chance to test drive the release candidate
is now running thin, in fact, if you haven't
tried the new OS until now you are better off
postponing your plans for a week and installing
the real thing. The final version of Windows 7
has already been sent to partners and is
scheduled to debut publicly later this week on
October 22.
Even if have pre-ordered Microsoft's latest OS,
installing it on top of your existing copy of
Windows may feel a bit premature if you haven't
been running the beta or RC as your main
installation. Thankfully, setting up a dual boot
configuration is both easy and practical. If
you're looking for a quick and dirty, yet
thorough how-to on getting Windows 7 to run
alongside your installation of XP or Vista, read
on.

We all know MSI as the company that had so much
potential but then faded a bit right as the X38
boards were released. However, they are back

strongest P55 lineups of any manufacturer. Their
flagship board is the P55-GD80 and its looking

Ultra X4 1050W Power Supply
Review
Tuesday October
20 @ 08:15:28 GMT +02:00
|
|
OCC has published a review on the Ultra X4 1050W
Power Supply A quote from the article:
On the whole the Ultra X4 1050W performed very
well. The DC voltage load regulation was very
good with little fluctuation from zero to full
load. The noise/ripple levels although within
the limits set down by the ATX12V V2.2
specification were a little higher than I would
like especially on the 12V rail. The Ultra X4
1050W marginally failed to maintain the minimum
level of efficiency of 80% as required by its 80
Plus certification giving 79% at 20% loading on
110VAC. The power factor dipped below 0.9 which
is very unusual even on some mid range power
supplies.

Verdis Reviews posted a review on
the CoolAge Frozen Orb X120 Transform X120TF CPU
Cooler
A quote from the article:
The CPU cooling market is dominated by the big
names in the industry such as the Cooler
Master's, Noctua's and Thermaltake's. These
larger companies have a proven track record and
consistently produce top quality cooling
solutions. However, there are numerous other
minnow companies out there that are producing
top notch products without the high price tags
demanded by the big names. Today, we take a look
at the X120TF Frozen Orb CPU cooler from CoolAge.
I, for one, must admit have only very recently
come across this manufacturer so how will this
cooler compare is the already very crowded CPU
cooling marketplace? Let's find out.

Windows 7 Review Part 11:
Compatibility and Reliability
Tuesday October
13 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
Paul Thurrott posted part 11 of his Windows 7
review
A quote from the article:
All of the new features and functionality in
Windows 7 are pointless if the system doesn't
work with the hardware devices and software
applications you already own. Likewise, if the
PC crashes or experiences other unreliable
behavior, good vibes about new features and user
experiences will quickly dissipate. In keeping
with its tactics on past Windows versions,
Microsoft has imbued Windows 7 with a host of
compatibility and reliability functionality.
Most of this stuff works in the background and
rarely needs to be manually accessed by the
user. But it's nice to know that it's there, and
if you ever do need it, chances are that Windows
7 can come to the rescue and right the wrongs.

change to Windows Explorer: Libraries. In
preparation to get you ready for the release of
Windows 7, TechReviewSource.com thought it would
be a good idea to take a look at perhaps the
biggest change to Windows Explorer: Libraries.
You'll run into Libraries each time you open a
Windows Explorer window and they come
pre-configured on each new installation of
Windows 7, but what are they for and how do you
use them? Their concept may seem a little
confusing at first, but they are actually very
handy if you know how to use them.

Galaxy GeForce GT 220 1GB Video
Card Review
Tuesday October
13 @ 08:22:05 GMT +02:00
|
TweakTown takes a look at the Galaxy GeForce GT
220 1GB Video Card
A quote from the article:
From a regular gamer’s perspective, NVIDIA’s
GeForce GT 220 GPU probably isn't really a video
card you would buy. The chances are this is the
kind of video card that's sitting inside your
work PC, assuming it doesn't use onboard video.
Does this make it a bad model, though? No, it's
just aimed at a different segment. If you're
looking for something that's going to pack a bit
more punch than an onboard video solution, this
is what you would buy - it's going to be perfect
for those older games at those lower
resolutions.
Galaxy’s take on the new GPU is pretty standard
- the cooler while being a little on the loud
side does a good job of keeping the card cool.
We also did see that World in Conflict was able
to achieve a 30 FPS minimum, which means other
games like Company of Heroes based off the same
engine are going to be able run at the same
numbers, which we consider playable.

10 Low-Budget AMD Motherboards
Tuesday October

InsideHW.com has compared 10 Low-Budget AMD
Motherboards
Since AMD presented some very interesting
low-budget CPUs lately, next good question is:
which motherboard should you purchase with that
CPU? We decided to review all AM2/AM2+
motherboards with price tag between 50€ and 70€
because we believe that some of those
motherboards can be very good choice especially
for new Athlon II CPUs. Except price, there was
another feature that all motherboards should
have: support for DDR2 memory. Since we are
choosing motherboard for a budget PC and DDR2
memory is cheaper and offers similar
performances to DDR3, it was logical choice. So,
let’s get cracking…

Canon EOS Rebel T1i DSLR Review
Tuesday October
06 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
|
HotHardware.com posted a review on the Canon EOS
Rebel T1i DSLR A quote from the article:
In the last year, a handful of camera
manufacturers have added HD video recording
capabilities to their DSLRs. Nikon initially
beat Canon in this race by introducing the $999,
12.3 megapixel D90. Canon wasn't too far behind,
though, with its $2,699, 21.1 megapixel EOS 5D
Mark II that is capable of capturing 1080p
(better than the D90's 720p capabilities). At
close to $3,000 however, the EOS 5D Mark II
wasn't a lot of competition for the D90 in the
consumer space.
Time and technology always march on and now
you'll find that Canon's latest offering, the
EOS Rebel T1i, is in a much better position to
compete against the D90 and against the brand
new 12.3 megapixel Nikon D5000. The 15.1
megapixel Rebel T1i not only beats the D90 and
D5000 in terms of HD video capabilities (like
the EOS 5D Mark II, the Rebel T1i can record
1080p movies), but it also comes with an MSRP of
$899.99 with its EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom
lens.

Futurelooks reviews a budget headset for
surround sound gamers A quote from the
article:
Whether it's playing games or watching movies,
sound is an integral part of many experiences on
a computer. For movies, it's all about
immersion. You want to be able to experience
what's going on, as if you were there. For games
immersion is also a factor, but depending on the
genre of game sound can also help you win. Many
3D shooter enthusiasts swear by multi-channel
surround sound setups, saying they allow them to
hear their enemies coming from all corners. Many
of those same enthusiasts live in environments
where owning a 5.1 or 7.1 computer speaker
system is a bad idea; either due to size or
disturbance of the peace. That's where the
surround sound headset comes into play.

JonnyGURU.com posted a review on the Cooler
Master OCZ Z Series 850W PSU
A quote from the article:
Since 80 Plus began their certification program
to help us consumers find the most efficient
power supplies out there, power supplies have
sought to make the most of the program by making
their units more and more efficient. Before too
long, 80 Plus added new classification ratings
to their program (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) to
help distinguish between high efficiency units.
Of the four 80 Plus certification levels, Gold
has been the hardest to pull off for power
supply companies. Requiring efficiency levels of
87%-90%-87% efficiency between 20% of full power
and full power operation, it is a difficult
design endeavor indeed. Today OCZ becomes the
first 80 Plus Gold unit to be tested at the
site. Come on in, and we'll see what a Gold unit
can do on the load tester. This should be
interesting.

What we need to do when it comes to looking at

the article:
Recently we've seen more and more companies
begin to mix up the HD 4890 quite a bit. Be it
big overclocks, new coolers or both, we're
seeing more of the card now than we did in
recent months. What makes this so interesting,
though, is that the new HD 5800 series which is
designed to take over where the HD 4800 leaves
off is ready to come out.
Today we'll be looking at a HD 4890 from HIS
which comes under the iCooler x4 name. Since
this is a series we haven't looked at before,
we're pretty sure that it carries with it a new
cooler. HIS tends to offer a pretty good cooler
when they move outside the box, so hopefully
this time is no different. Let's have a look at
the package before we have a closer look at the
card itself and its spec before checking out the
performance.

OCC has published a review on
Darkest of Days Performance Testing
A quote from the article:
What you can see based on the results in these
graphs is that when the Physx effects are set to
the lowest level, the performance from ATI's
cards is almost identical to the competing
Nvidia cards. However, the GTX 285 finally pulls
away from the HD4890 at the top end. The point
of showing these numbers is to show that yes,
the game is playable with non Physx-enabled
cards. When playing through the game without the
Physx effects after playing with them enabled,
it leaves a somewhat less than satisfied taste
in your mouth. In this series of testing, you
can see that a Crossfire profile is not ready
for this game, as the dual-GPUs perform at a
level less than the single-GPU HD4890. On the
other hand, the GTX 295 just flies through this
game, showing that Nvidia has the SLI profile in
place and working.

TweakTown posted ATI Catalyst 9.9 Vista Driver
Analysis
The 9.10s should be a fairly exciting driver
with it being the first official driver for the
new HD 5800 video cards that are due out later
this month, for now though we're still with our
beloved HD 4800 cards and we'll find out just
what's happening with the 9.9 drivers.
Normally we would get stuck into making note of
what performance improvements are seen, but with
nothing in the release notes this month, we'll
get stuck straight into the benchmarking side of
things and see if there's any surprises.

InsideHW.com has compared performances of ATI
and NVIDIA graphics cards in CyberLink MediaShow
Espresso transcoding application
New graphics cards from ATI and NVIDIA can
support hardware acceleration of various video
manipulation processes so time needed for some
of those tasks can shorten, especially when it
comes to video transcoding. Until recently for
such task you needed separate application
written specially for each GPU. Now, there is
one application that can use both GPUs and do
exactly the same job: CyberLink MediaShow
Espresso. CyberLink promises ten times faster
transcoding by using GPU processing power along
with ability to transcode few files at once…

DragonSteelMods takes a look at the TrickleStar
PC TrickleSaver A quote from the article:
Today for review I've got the PC TrickleSaver
from TrickleStar and it's a product that hooks
up to your PC and then to your peripherals like
a printer and monitor that automatically turns
them off when you power off the PC. It works by
connecting via USB to your PC and then sensing
when you turn your computer off, then it
disconnects power to the peripherals attached to
it. It's an easy way to kill the electricity
vampires that you've got connected to your PC
and save you a bit of money in the long run.
It's nice because there is no user interaction
required except for the initial installation of
it, and that's easy to do. So read on to learn
about a great little product that can actually
save you some money..

A quote from the article:
With Windows 7, the security pain of the past
decade comes to a decisive close. This is the
most secure Windows version ever created, one
that builds on the solid and proven foundation
of Windows Vista while removing some of the heft
and monolith intransience of its predecessor.
Perfect? No, Microsoft still bows to the
industry machinery that prevents it from just
protecting Windows users across the board and
bundling core anti-malware functionality into
the OS. But it's still better than ever, and
let's face, there isn't a PC sold today that
doesn't come with some form of additional
security software. And Microsoft's unfortunately
separate (but free) Security Essentials package
completes the picture. Let's take a look.

A quote from the article:
Here at Tech-Reviews we've unfortunately never
had the chance to review any desktop memory
kits. However, whilst spec'ing up the components
for our new i7 test rig an email suddenly
dropped in my inbox from OCZ as they wanted to
send us some OCZ Platinum DDR3 memory for
review. After taking a look at the
specifications and features of the memory, it
seemed to be the perfect kit for an i7 rig -
their website confirmed this with it stated that
they're designed and optimized specifically for
i7 processors.
Boasting speeds of 1600 MHz, low voltage
requirements and very good latencies, these DDR3
memory sticks certainly look good on paper. So I
welcome you to Tech-Reviews' first memory review
where we hope to find out if this DDR3 OCZ
Platinum memory kit is up to scratch.

Microsoft Windows 7 Graphics
Improvements
Tuesday September
01 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
Tech ARP posted an article on the Microsoft
Windows 7 Graphics Improvements.
Beta testers have so far been very impressed
with Windows 7. It's fast and it's stable. One
of the reasons is the improved graphics
capability in Windows 7. Microsoft seemed
hesitant in utilizing the full capabilities of
the graphics processor in Windows Vista, which
was a real shame. Windows 7 changes all that,
and that's what we will be talking about today.
Back in June, we first revealed inside
information on the kind of improvement in
graphics that you will see in Windows 7. That
first article focused on DirectX improvements in
Windows 7, which covers everything from Direct
2D to Direct3D 11. This article will refer to
the same topics, albeit in much less detail, so
be sure to give our in-depth article on Direct3D
Improvements In Windows 7 a read.
In this article, we will focus on the Windows 7
graphical desktop, which will also include
everything from Aero to 3D gaming and video
playback. Although Microsoft has publicly
revealed some details on some of these
improvements, this article will give you the
full details.

Can Ubuntu 9.10 Outperform Mac
OS X 10.6?
Tuesday September
01 @ 08:46:09 GMT +02:00
|
Phoronix takes a look at the performance of
Ubuntu 9.10 in comparison to Mac OS X 10.6
Back on Friday we published Mac OS X 10.6
benchmarks and found it to offer some terrific
performance improvements, but at the same time,
there were a few notable regressions. Apple
engineers have been working hard at pushing
technologies like Grand Central Dispatch (GCD),
OpenCL, full 64-bit support, and other changes
to their OS X stack to bolster its performance
capabilities and reduce the overall footprint.
Now that we have tested Mac OS X 10.6, we are
seeing how its performance compares to that of
Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" will be
out in October and does have some performance
improvements as our earlier tests have shown,
but Canonical engineers have not been
exclusively focusing on performance
optimizations with this release. Can the Karmic
Koala outperform Snow Leopard? Yes and no.

Windows 7 Review Part 4: New
User Experience
Tuesday September
01 @ 08:15:28 GMT +02:00
|
Paul Thurrott posted part 4 of his Windows 7
Review
A quote from the article:
If you're one of the millions of people who use
Windows Vista, your very first reaction to
Windows 7 may be somewhat mixed. After all, the
obvious, up-front user experiences in Windows 7
appear to be simply carried over from its
predecessor. But it doesn't take long to notice
the differences. Windows 7 installs more quickly
than does Vista, and with less effort. It boots
up and resumes from sleep and hibernation more
quickly. It features major UI innovations in its
new taskbar, Jump Lists, and virtualized
Libraries. It provides the native ability to
interact with the entire system using
multi-touch and gesture functionality, the first
desktop OS to do so.
Dig a little deeper, and more and more new
features become apparent. Microsoft went over
virtually the entire Windows OS, fine-tuned
every single feature to be simpler, easier, and
more efficient, and then made sure it was all as
attractive and usable as possible. People have
deridingly called Windows 7 "Windows Vista done
right," and while there's some truth to that, a
better way to look at it is this: Microsoft took
the solid foundation it created with Windows
Vista and tweaked, prodded, and improved every
inch of the damn thing. And what they came up
with was Windows 7, the sexiest version of
Windows ever created.

Windows 7 Review Part 3:
Installing, Upgrading, and Migrating
Tuesday August
25 @ 08:47:50 GMT +02:00
|
Paul Thurrott posted part 3 of his Windows 7
review
A quote from the article:
For the most part, Microsoft's supported methods
for installing Windows 7 closely mirror those
for Windows Vista. In some cases, such as the
interactive Setup routine that very few people
will actually use, the process has been
simplified, in keeping with the general Windows
7 mantra. Elsewhere, however, life has become
more difficult for users, especially those still
running Windows XP who wish to upgrade their
existing PCs. (This, too, is probably a pretty
small crowd, relatively speaking.)
From a technological perspective, the Windows 7
Setup routine is simply the next version of the
image-based Setup that debuted with Windows
Vista and Windows Server 2008. It features the
same basic installation phases, can be serviced
and updated in the same ways, and supports
in-place product edition upgrading. For this
reason, all retail versions of Windows 7 include
the code needed to upgrade in-place to a
higher-end product edition. The product key
included with the retail packaging determines
which version you can activate.

OCC has published a review on the Patriot 64GB
Torqx SSD A quote from the article:
After using this drive as my main OS drive for
about two weeks now, I can say that I am sold on
the merits of the latest generation of solid
state drives. Having gotten used to using an
Intel SSD, I was afraid that the stuttering
problems of the earlier JMicron-controlled
drives would manifest themselves. But once I
pulled the drive open and found that the TORQX
uses the INDILinx controller, those fears were
quickly erased. The 64GB TORQX delivers great
read and write performance with access times
that make traditional drives look like they are
running in slow motion. At 64GB, this drive is a
little small for a full-on install. My normal
everyday computer has over 200GB worth of
installed programs and I would not be able to
run this drive in that system the way it is
configured. Have no fear though Patriot offers
SSD's in sizes up to 256GB in size for those
that want only a Solid State Drive.

ASUS P7P55D Deluxe Preview
Tuesday August

|
|
OCC has published a preview on the ASUS P7P55D
Deluxe A quote from the article:
The P7P55D Deluxe is the top board in the series
of P7 boards that will be available at launch.
The hierarchy, lowest to highest, is the P7P55D,
P7P55D EVO and the P7P55D Deluxe, so you have a
board that fits for just about everyone, each
one feature packed. The Deluxe version features
a build philosophy labeled Extreme Design that
focuses on three key areas, Reliability, Saftey
and last, but not least, Performance. This is
not just a catchphrase but a way to offer more
value as well as a higher performing, easier to
use product. Things such as additional ESD
protection, Stack Cool 3/+ with two 2oz copper
layers, Xtreme Phase, T-probe and Turbo V/EVO.
From the front view you can see something
missing right off the bat. The northbridge, as
it has been known, is no longer used as some of
the functionality has been shifted to the
Lynnfield processor. The traditional southbridge
has been replaced by what is now known as the
PCH. The back of the PCB features additional
heatsinks for the 16+3 phase VRM circuit. The
heatsinks are not attached with push pins but
rather spring loaded screws.

AMD Phenom II 965 X4 Black
Edition Processor Review

|
Hi Tech Legion posted a review on the AMD Phenom
II 965 X4 Black Edition Processor A quote from
the article:
Much of the focus lately has been on the Intel
Core i7 CPUs, with their cutting edge
technology, but AMD is not a company to fall by
the way side. The AM3 CPUs have shown their
ability to be outstanding chips for the money,
offering much in the way of technology that is
comparable to that of the Intel offerings, and
usually for a significantly less expensive
price. The other selling point that AMD has had
in their offerings is the unlocked chips of the
Black Edition family. These chips, with unlocked
multipliers, have allowed for excellent
overclocking at a fraction of the cost for an
unlocked chip from Intel. With the flagship 955
BE beginning to show its age, AMD has seen the
need to answer the call for more and has
answered soundly. The AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
enters the AMD lineup as the new unlocked
flagship CPU, with 3.4 GHz of base clock speed.
The AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE features much of the
same technology of the AM3 chips, but with
increased abilities in overclocking and base
speeds. AMD has done an excellent job of
managing to develop a strong hold on the
mainstream CPU market, and their introduction of
the 965 BE is definitely a move to further
solidify this stance in the mainstream CPU
market.

Until 2009, Solid State Drive (SSD) popularity

Crucial, being The Memory Experts that they are,

with the test-proven Indilinx Barefoot

insured that the M225-series will deliver
outstanding performance. Benchmark Reviews tests

InsideHW.com has reviewed LG KM900 Arena PDA A
quote from the article:
When Apple iPhone was introduced few years ago
it brought revolution to PDA market that other
manufactures were not prepared for. Although we
don't find iPhone to be the best PDA that ever
existed on the face of earth (no it really
isn't) numbers don't lie and the fact is that
iPhone is one of the best selling PDAs ever.
Because of this other manufacturers couldn't
afford themselves to sit on their hands and do
nothing about it, so making the iPhone "killer"
quickly became favorite sport of many IT
companies. As result of created market
environment we got new LG KM900 Arena PDA in our
test lab strait from LG's assembly line.

TweakTown compared the VGA performance of
Windows 7 (Final OEM) vs. Windows Vista
Today we'll be having a look at how the new
Windows 7 operating system goes against Windows
Vista which has really got a love / hate
relationship going for so many people. The
uptake on the OS was never great, which is the
main reason why today we're still including XP
in our graphics card benchmarks. The main focus
today will be VGA performance; we'll have a look
at one card in a number of our benchmarks and
see how performance differs in the two operating
systems.
There isn't a whole lot that has to be said
today, so we'll quickly have a look at our
testbed and give a quick blurb on what we're
doing before getting stuck into the benchmarks
and see how the two operating systems perform.

Computer & Consumer Electronic Reviews has
posted a new article on the Corsair P64
Performance Series 64GB SSD (CMFSSD-64GBG2D)
A quote from the article:
The Corsair P64 is the smallest drive in the
family but don't be fooled. The capacity is more
than enough for your notebook or netbook. The
numbers may claim that the drive isn't the
fastest but the difference has been hard to
notice in day to day use. The drive has been
completely stutter free since day one and that's
the biggest improvement and best reason to pick
Corsair's Performance Series over everyone else
in the market. Truly, the only change I can
recommend is for Corsair to step up and stand by
a much longer warranty than the two years it is
currently offering.

Benchmark Reviews posted a review on the OCZ
Vertex Turbo MLC SATA SSD A quote from the
article:
With generation 3 guidelines for the 6.0 GBps
SATA interface already being used in prototype
motherboards for show at the not-so-distant 2010
CES in January, it's understandable to see the
speeds of Solid State Drive products increase so
quickly with each new model. The Indilinx
Barefoot controller has become the backbone chip
for over a dozen different SSD models, first
introduced in the OCZ Vertex SSD, and now make a
return appearance in the OCZ Vertex Turbo SSD
series.
Identical to the popular OCZ Vertex SSD in every
aspect except NAND selection, the Vertex Turbo
SSD series offers the same Indilinx 'Barefoot'
controller and 64MB of DRAM buffer, but now
boasts ultra-fast 270/200 MBps read and write
speeds. Benchmark Reviews tests the reaction
time and bandwidth performance for the 120GB OCZ
Vertex Turbo SSD OCZSSD2-1VTXT120G model against
over two dozen other storage products in this

Madshrimps posted a review on the Corsair Hydro
Series H50 Tested on AMD Phenom A quote from
the article:
The boxed cooler had big problems keeping the
CPU stable at 3.4Ghz. It was just stable enough
to run prime custom 20K FFT. Trying to boot at
3.5Ghz resulted in lockups, BSOD's or straight
errors when starting prime. When the testing was
over I immediately removed the motherboard from
the PC. Imagine it takes a few minutes to do so,
then I started to remove the stock cooler, I can
assure you it was still very hot. Its fan also
spun flat out all the time during the test and
was very audible. With the TRUE doing the
cooling, the rig behaved far better. Squeezing
off the boxed cooler is already very nice. Even
testing at 3.5Ghz was no issue. More however,
was limited by this particular CPU we tested.
The Corsair H50 continued to impress me, by
gaining over the TRUE setup.

Hi Tech Legion posted a review on the Azza
Solano 1000 Gaming Case A quote from the
article:
The common trend among gaming cases has become
lots of lit up fans and large windows to show
off those expensive internal components. We are
seeing more and more cases with 200mm fans or
larger, and and an increasing number of lit up
cases with large windows. This growing interest
has led many of the leading case manufacturers
to try and push the envelope as far as they can
when it comes to cases. Among the manufacturers
who has tried to meet these growing needs is
Azza. The Azza Solano 1000 is a superbly built
Full ATX tower case. The Azza Solano 1000
features a beveled front panel with the tiny
little Azza logo on it. The Azza Solano 1000,
simply put, is a beast of a case. The quality
and attention to detail, as well as the feature
set found on many higher end cases, makes the
Azza Solano a case of strong interest for anyone
considering a gaming build.

TweakTown posted Corsair Performance Series
Solid State RAID Report A couple of weeks ago
we started playing with the Samsung S3C29RBB01
controller that is found in the Corsair
Performance Series and Samsung PB22-J solid
state drives. We were impressed with the Corsair
P256’s cost per gigabyte and found that it was a
very good performer as well. The drive was able
to win a couple of our benchmark tests and more
surprisingly they were tasks that you would use
on a daily basis, something that surprised us
since our first generation Samsung drive we
reviewed was heavily optimized for server
orientated tasks.
One area that we just glanced over in our review
was Samsung’s Self-Healing feature. Today we are
going to talk about this exclusive technology
that is built right into the drive. Let’s get
right along with it and have a detailed look at
Self-Healing to see what it does and why it is
such a hot topic.

Benchmark Reviews posted a review on the MSI
N275GTX Twin Frozr OC Video Card A quote from
the article:
The graphics card market is pretty much a two
man slugfest at the moment. ATI and NVIDIA trade
blows at irregular intervals in a brutal game of
strategy. The GeForce GTX 275 was a punch that
NVIDIA held in reserve, just waiting for ATI to
release their HD4890 card. When launch day came
for ATI, lo and behold, NVIDIA had the GTX 275
up their sleeve, ready for production.
Essentially, the GTX 275 combines the GPU of the
GTX 285 with the memory architecture of the GTX
275 with performance and pricing that neatly
slots between the two.
MSI is an established player in the graphics
card market, and their take on the GTX 275 pulls
no punches. They put together a unique design,
featuring twin PWM fans and a 5-heatpipe cooler,
for their N275GTX Twin Frozr OC Edition, and one
look should tell you that they are serious about
performance. Benchmark Reviews is pleased to
offer you a detailed, fact-filled look at one of
the products at the heart of the sweet spot for
gaming graphics.

NZXT Beta Computer Case Review
Tuesday
July 28 @ 08:15:28 GMT +02:00
|
|
APH Networks has published a new review on the
NZXT Beta Computer Case Generally, software
has usually not been released in a timely
fashion; some software may take different
lengths of time to be officially released. Take
Windows Vista, Half Life 2, or most notably,
even Duke Nukem Forever -- as common examples --
especially where the latter has been infamous
for indefinite release dates to this very day.
One thing that has been common in the software
sector is the use of beta testing. Free public
betas are a good way to get feedback on a piece
work in progress; and to get some "free"
publicity for the product itself. This has been
especially effective with major productions in
the software industry such as the upcoming
Windows 7. Meanwhile, for Google services like
Gmail, has only been recently taken out of the
arguably abused 'beta' status after five long
years. Regardless of the length of time it
takes, beta software has always been a welcome
addition for consumers that wish to test the
"next big thing" ahead of time.
Anyways, we digress, the reason we are
talking about beta is because of a new computer
chassis interesting named the "Beta" from gaming
chassis manufacturer NZXT. The inspiration
behind the NZXT Beta is to design a case "that
delivers gamers a chassis designed for
tremendous value without sacrificing
performance." On the positive side, at least we
didn't have to wait indefinitely to get our
hands on this case (har har). Nor is enduring a
product that normally carries a 'beta' status
incorporates expected elements such as unrefined
finishing -- or do we? You'll have to read on to
find out. Jokes aside, enthusiasts do not
normally associate a gaming PC case with the
word "value"; and it's hard to blame them.
Budget PC cases are not exactly suited for
gamers, especially when you want to bring your
"1337 gaming rig!!!!111!1!shiftoneoneone" to a
LAN party. Regardless of what it is, today we
will take a look at a case that is marketed
towards a group of so-called 'budget gamers'

Welcome to the next generation of
PC security: The Returnil Virtual System 2010
Beta
Returnil Virtual System 2010 Beta uses a
combination of antivirus and virtualization
technologies to protect your system against both
malicious software and unwanted changes.
Returnil virtualization technology clones your
computer’s System Partition and boots the PC
into a controlled virtual world rather than
native Windows; allowing you to run your
applications in a completely isolated and secure
environment. All activity is then performed
within the virtual environment, ensuring that
the operating system itself cannot be
compromised by viruses, other malicious
software, bad installations,
system crashes, or user error. A simple restart
is all that is required to return the PC to its
original state.
The addition of malware detection in the virtual
environment, the all new Returnil Virus Guard,
works to ensure that your computing experience
is free from known malicious content while
working hand-in-hand with our virtual system
technology to provide the most effective and
seamless malicious content removal available.
How often have you been faced with the aftermath
of an improper removal or false positive
detection? By using Returnil’s native
reboot-to-restore functionality, removal of
malware becomes both trivial and completely
safe, while ensuring that false positive
detections do not result in unintended disaster!
Whether you are working with files located on
your computer or files located in the cloud,
Returnil Virtual System 2010 Beta will keep both
your computer and data secure.

23 Hard Drive Roundup
Tuesday

InsideHW.com has reviewed 23 hard drives
When asked what hard drive should be purchased,
most users would answer: The bigger the better.
But is this the right choice? In most cases it
is, but we don't need that much space nowadays,
so some of us prefer faster drives, some of
silent ones and so on. Luckily there is variety
of models to choose from. The time of SSDs is
coming for certain, but at the same time hard
drives are getting bigger and cheaper. In very
near future we can predict transitional period
where SSD will be used as system drive while HDD
will be used as data storage. Since SSD prices
are not showing significant drop tendency, we
will be using HDDs for some time in the future.
So, we decided to make, maybe for the last time,
big hard drive roundup.

Rbmods posted a review on the AMD Phenom 2 905e
CPU A quote from the article:
AMD processor reached our mailbox a week ago,
it's the Phenom 2 905e which is supposed to be a
mid range processor. You can get this for around
180$ so it's not to badly priced if the
performance is decent. We are going to compare
it vs the high end Phenom 2 955 and mid end 940
from AMD to see where we can place this
processor performance wise.

Bjorn3D takes a look at the Gigabyte 9800 GT
Silent Cell A quote from the article:
Have you been looking for a card that is silent
yet is able to play all of the latest games
without looking like mud? Well look no further,
today we have the Gigabyte 9800 GT Silent Cell.
Powered by the Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT GPU, this
card has enough power to play just about every
game maxed. So you may ask, how does this thing
cool itself yet still be silent? Well, unlike
normal 9800 GT's, this card has no fan. This may
seem like quite a surprize, I know I didnt
beleive it when I heard about it!
Gigabyte could not just get away with useing the
stock cooler for the 9800 GT, it is just too
small to passivly cool such a hot card, so they
took matters into their own hands, and have
designed a custom heat sink just for this
version of the card. I was pretty surprized at
the size, you can see for yourself below. Not
only has Gigabyte made this card completly
passive, they have included a massive 1 GB of
GDDR3, so you can be sure your card has enough
RAM to plow through any high textured games.

Cooling Accelero Xtreme 4870 X2 GPU cooler A
quote from the article:
Recently one of the more interesting product
released in their VGA cooler line-up is the all
new Accelero XTREME 4780X2 cooler. It is a
massive eight heatpipe based cooler that might
be as big as a whale, yet is virtually silent
and has extraordinary cooling performance.
If you are gutsy enough to strip down the X2 and
mount a this cooler, then you can achieve
temperatures that are roughly 30 degrees C lower

IT PRO news have a Toshiba TG01 smartphone
review A quote from the article:
We've been getting excited about the Toshiba
TG01 smartphone since we first heard mutterings
about its arrival back around the time of Mobile
World Congress in February. Often, with such a
build up, expectations reach ridiculous heights
and the resultant anti-climax is disappointing
to say the least. Much as it pains us to say it,
the TG01 falls with a big thud into that
category.

VirtualDub 1.9.3 Beta

VirtualDub is a video capture/processing
utility for 32-bit Windows platforms
(95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU
General Public License (GPL). It lacks the
editing power of a general-purpose editor such
as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast
linear operations over video. It has
batch-processing capabilities for processing
large numbers of files and can be extended with
third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly
geared toward processing AVI files, although it
can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets
of BMP images.

Windows 7 E Editions Preview

Paul Thurrott posted a preview on the Windows 7
E Editions
A quote from the article:
It may be a while before we know whether
Microsoft's decision to offer special "E"
versions of Windows 7 in Europe--that is,
versions of Windows 7 that do not include
Internet Explorer--is crazy like a fox or just
plain crazy. But there's little doubt that the
software giant's answer to the increasingly
irrational antitrust regulators in the EU is
inventive. Rather than kowtow to the EU's
demands that it bundle competing web browsers in
Windows 7 via a so-called ballot screen,
Microsoft simply removed the source of the
problem. In the Windows 7 E Editions, which will
be provided to all of its customers in the EU,
Internet Explorer simply isn't included. And you
can't add it back via Programs and Features as
you can in versions of Windows 7 that will be
sold elsewhere around the world.

Tool that helps Intel(R) Core 2(tm)-based (or
others) test for system stability in a
relatively short time. Tool that helps Intel(R)
Core 2(tm)-based (or others) test for system
stability in a relatively short time (greatly
shorter than Prime95). The program utilizes
Intel(R)'s very own CPU stress testing binaries
for the most stressful, and speedy testing. This
software will put even the highest end Intel(R)
Core 2(tm) Extreme rigs to their knees, and
shows how REALLY stable the system is. It is
highly recommended to use a 64-bit Windows
operating system (XP x64 preferred) for the most
accurate testing and using maximum amount of
free system memory. It will work on even Intel(R)
Pentium III processors, but unfortunately,
Intel(R) designed the binaries in a way that
makes it not run at all on any AMD CPUs.
Donations are appreciated!
Caution: Not for beginning overclockers. This
program WILL stress the CPU, Memory, North

highest extent! Make sure your PC is properly
cooled and ventilated!

2 Minutes for Ubuntu Eye Candy
Tuesday June 30 @ 08:52:01 GMT +02:00

Bunftu posted a brief guide about configuring
Compiz under Ubuntu Linux
When taking a look at "CompizConfig Settings
Manager" in Ubuntu it can be a little
overwhelming when considering all the possible
combinations available to us. Often when you set
up a couple effects, it seems that you rarely
ever see them, or they have to be self induced.
Even when we place an effect on a common task we
quickly become bored with the same effect
happening time and time again.
After taking a closer look at the "Animations"
panel located inside "CompizConfig Settings
Manager". I took a close look at the “Window
Match” string and compiled my own string to
include as many “Window Match” keywords as
possible.

Mainstream Graphics Card Roundup
Tuesday June 30 @ 08:49:36 GMT +02:00
|
Tom's Hardware Guide posted a Mainstream
Graphics Card Roundup
When it comes to graphics cards, the upper crust
of the mid-range is perhaps your best bet for
snagging great performance at a reasonable
price. In order to deliver the goods without
breaking the bank, vendors usually equip their
cards with enhanced cooling solutions or a bit
of extra graphics RAM.
If you're only comparing 3D performance, the
difference between these mid-range cards and
those you'd find at the very top of our latest
graphics charts is less than what you might
think. While the GeForce GTX 285 may be the
fastest single-GPU card around, a GeForce GTX
260 or a Radeon HD 4870 doesn't lag behind by
much. If you can live with that relatively minor
difference, you stand to save between $100 to
$150 or more.

Asus Crosshair III Formula
motherboard Review
Tuesday June 30 @ 08:26:05 GMT +02:00
|
TechSpot posted a review on the Asus Crosshair
III Formula motherboard
A quote from the article:
Roughly a year ago we reviewed the Asus
Crosshair II Formula, based on the Nvidia nForce
780a SLI chipset. This board provided those who
were brave enough to pick up a Phenom processor
with a stable platform that sported a number of
impressive features such as Triple-SLI. At the
time we said the Crosshair II Formula was a well
designed motherboard that was let down by a
power hungry chipset and sub-par processors.
But AMD managed to turn things around when they
released the Phenom II X4 with models clocked at
2.8GHz and 3.0GHz. And now with the Phenom II X4
955 in their arsenal, AMD is finally starting to
look like they mean business.
Now after much anticipation AMD has a processor
that really deserves a quality high-end
motherboard. The new Crosshair III Formula dumps
the Nvidia chipset for the popular AMD 790FX and
as a result drops SLI support for CrossFireX.
This latest Asus motherboard comes stocked with
just about everything in traditional ROG
(Republic Of Gamers) fashion.

Elite Bastards posted a review on the ASUS Xonar
DS PCI sound card
A quote from the article:
Compared to the larger PCBs, complete with EMI
shield, that we're used to seeing from ASUS'
Xonar parts, the Xonar DS is certainly
diminutive, doubtless taking some hints from the
small form factor of Auzentech's X-Fi Forte
which proved that audio quality needn't be
compromised by using a small physical PCB. Also
of note here is that the OPAMPs used by the
Xonar DS can be replaced by the user if you're

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 CPU Review
Tuesday June 23 @ 08:07:19 GMT +02:00
|
|
HotHardware.com posted
a review on the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 CPU
A quote from the article:
It was not too long ago that the web was buzzing
with dual-core versus quad-core debates. Sides
were taken and lines were drawn. At that time,
one of the main arguments against quad-core
processors was their high asking price. But as
time passed and manufacturing refinements were
made, costs steadily decreased and quad-cores
found their way into the more mainstream market
segments. And before you knew it, a price war
was imminent.
Intel and AMD have been going at one another for
years. With AMD unable to compete well at the
ultra high-end of the market, however, their
focus shifted towards the mainstream market
segments. As always, Intel responded and their
most recent salvo comes in the form the
affordable Core 2 Quad Q8400 processor. Since
the Q9400, a 2.66GHz Yorkfield quad-core, was
already on the market, why did Intel feel the
need to release another, affordable quad-core
model? One reason could be to increase yield and
utilize dies that would otherwise be discarded.
Another reason would be to position another
product at the same price point as AMD's.
Whatever the case may be, competition is always
good for the consumer as it usually drives
prices lower and provides more options to choose
from. With that in mind, let's take a look at
the Intel Core 2 Quad 8400 to see if it's worthy
of consideration for your next build...

G.Skill Falcon 128GB SSD
A quote from the article:
While SSDs may be a dime a dozen, there are very
few drives out there that could be counted as a
viable alternative to the ages-old hard disk
drive. Stutter issues as well as general
performance pitfalls have kept these expensive
products to niche markets instead of making
serious inroads as people's OS drives. G.Skill's
Falcon series promises to rectify all that. But
can it?

80-way Thermal Interface Material
Performance Test

Benchmark Reviews posted 80-way Thermal
Interface Material Performance Test Prior to
our 33-Way Thermal Compound Comparison article
published back in March 2008, there had not been
another project of its size available online. So
when Benchmark Reviews revealed our test
results, it was a surprise to find that many
overclockers had been ill-informed by marketing
hype and misleading enthusiast opinions.
Benchmark Reviews later published several other
complimentary articles for performance hardware
enthusiasts, offering an instructional guide on
Thermal Paste Application Methods and testing
for the Best CPU Cooler Performance. As the
author to both of those articles, I have
discovered that the most critical factors
pertaining to thermal cooling performance seems
to be overlooked. In this massive follow-up
article, which was built from entirely new
project data taking over one year of research to
publish, our collection of test material has
grown to include every product we could acquire
from the marketplace. Benchmark Reviews has
received advice of industry experts,
manufacturers, and elite overclockers to bring
you this comprehensive 80-Way Thermal Interface
Material cooling performance comparison
benchmark test.

MSI 285GTX Superpipe Review
Tuesday June 16 @ 08:18:28 GMT +02:00
|
|
Bjorn3D takes a look at the MSI
285GTX Superpipe.
A quote from the article:
I myself look at what that manufacturer uses for
a heatsink on their video card. Yes, getting
extra software, having an overclocked video card
are all niceties but what's the point in getting
a video card when you might need to spend an
extra 30-50 dollars on top of your video card
for a good GPU cooler that will make sure the
video card stays cool at all times. Not to
mention the possibilities of 'WHAT IF' that GPU
cooler does not properly work, or gets installed
wrong, what then?
MSI has been one of the top manufacturers that
uses an aftermarket cooler for thier video
cards. The 285GTX Superpipe is no exception to
MSI's continuation of quality, not to mention
their ability to think outside the box when it
concerns thier products.

Microsoft recently announced the consumer
technical preview (CTP) of Microsoft Office
2010, which was shown to attendees of
Microsoft's TechNet conference.
TechReviewSource.com has reviewed the CTP before
its scheduled release date (July 2009) and check
it out. Microsoft has changed around a few
things, especially when it comes to the "ribbon"
menu integration across all programs in the
suite and a few other features with regards to

ATI Catalyst 9.5 Vista Driver Analysis
Tuesday, May

|
TweakTown posted ATI Catalyst 9.5 Vista Driver
Analysis
This is a bit of an interesting release. Another
website late last week leaked the Catalyst 9.5
drivers out; these didn't seem to be a beta,
though, for the plain fact that they seemed to
be WHQL certified. It's also not that uncommon
for WHQL drivers to show up a few days before
they are seen on the Game.AMD website.
With the drivers not showing on the Game.AMD
website yet we don't have any release notes on
what to expect from the latest driver release.
So with that said, we'll be winging it a bit and
just taking everything as it comes. So let's not
delay any longer and check out the testbed then
we’ll get stuck into the performance side of
things to see what exactly is on offer from the
Catalyst 9.5s.

Ubuntu 64-bit More Competitive Against Mac
OS X

Phoronix compared Ubuntu 64-bit against Mac OS X
Last week we published Ubuntu 9.04 vs. Mac OS X
10.5.6 benchmarks where we compared the
performance of these two popular operating
systems on a Mac Mini. With the OS X kernel
currently being 32-bit but with support for
64-bit applications, we had used the 32-bit
version of Ubuntu 9.04. In a majority of the
Leopard operating system from Apple outperformed
Canonical's Jaunty Jackalope, but today we are
adding in the results from an Ubuntu 64-bit
installation. As you can see from the results,
the x86_64 version of Ubuntu Linux is more
competitive against Mac OS X 10.5.6.

OCZ Z-Drive Sneak Peek - 4
SSDs, One PCIe Card

HotHardware posted a preview on the OCZ Z-Drive
It's not all that often that we post something
up in the news just for the drool factor alone.
However, we'd go so far as to say that this
little slab of circuitry classifies as a
proverbial technological "hey-now!" .
That said, we will offer one very large caveat
that what you're about to see is a VERY early
stage design prototype of OCZ's upcoming Z-Drive
SSD RAID PCI Express card. In other words, drool
for now but you can't and won't ever be able to
buy this little gem as you see it here. However,
the product's base design approach will remain
largely unchanged when it hits the market (soon
we hope).
Alright then, commence the salivation process...
